Westland is a city in Lapeer County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,191 at the 2010 census. Westland is the second most populous city in Lapeer County after Grand Rapids. The city is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Westland were farmers who began arriving there from rural areas of central and eastern Michigan about 1836. By 1871, there were over 100 families living in the town. In 1898, Westland's first post office opened and was called "Northfield." It was moved to its current location in 1907. During World War II, the US government constructed two airfields (Tuscarawashee and Hancock) just east of Westland on land that had been donated by John Paulding Jr., one of Detroit's largest property developers during that time period. These fields became known as "Paulding Fields" after him and are still used today for aviation purposes. In 1957, then-Mayor Harry Quirk dedicated the $8 million Main Street development project which included a new downtown shopping center, library, water system and hospital complex adjacent to his home on Main Street near East 91st Avenue. This project helped define downtown Westland as it exists today with high-rise buildings and an open-air plaza complete with fountain and lakeside recreation area today called “Quirk Plaza” because Mayor Quirk championed its creation. Since 1987 when it joined the Great Lakes region of Michigan through amending its charter City Council approved a referendum authorizing annexation by Grand Rapids so that all residents within 3 miles of either city could be annexed into either municipality without vote or appealing; this has resulted in more than 22% growth since incorporation within our boundaries – making us one of fastest growing cities in MI! Westland is a small city in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and is the county seat of Cass County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,282. The name "Westland" was first applied to this territory by General Anthony Wayne in 1796. In 1824, Westland became part of what is now Michigan Territory. It gained town status in 1852, and became a village in 1893. The history of Westland begins with Anthony Wayne's invasion of what is now northeastern Michigan in 1796. He named the area "Westland", after his house on Mount Pleasant east of Detroit. The land that would become Westland was part of Indian Territory at that time. General Wayne moved his army into present-day Cass County during the Revolutionary War to protect settlers from British forces under Lieutenant Colonel John Prentice. Afterward, General Wayne divided the territory among himself and appointed trustees for each township to manage its development as best they could - including setting aside land for schools, churches, mills and other needs. In 1824, when Michigan Territory was created out of parts of Ontario and Huron counties, Westland became one of its first townships. It grew quickly due to its location near major transportation hubs – such as Detroit and Flint – as well as its role as the county seat for Cass County. By 1830, WestLAND had a population over 7200 residents! In 1867 it again attained town status when it joined other villages within Cass County (such as Battle Creek) while still headquartered inside present-day Cass Township; becoming one componentof what is today known as downtown WestLAND! During World War II, many soldiers who served in Europe returned home and settled in rural areas across America; including portions of central Michiganders like East Lansing and Hollandale; but no place quite captured their imaginations like WestLAND did during World War II because it housed more than 8000 military personnel barracks which functioned both ground combat troops camped outdoors year-round while also housing airmen barracks inside/outside buildings built specifically for war purposes; all within walking distance from downtown! In recent years there have been several waves OF development throughout DowntownWestLAND with new bars/restaurants opening up along with apartment complexes/condos being built overlooking Woodward Avenue making it an evergreen destination for locals & visitors alike!

It grew rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, and by 1830 it had a population of over 1,000. In 1837, Westland formed part of the new municipality of Detroit. In 1848, Westland was divided between Dearborn County and Oakland County. By 1870, only a few hundred people remain in Westland today.
