Wixom, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 44,027 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The name "Wixom" comes from Wabash River Indian word meaning "the place where they make wagons." The first European to visit what is now Wixom was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1669-70 when he explored this region for fur traders on his way to seek out new fur markets in Canada. Jesuit missionaries also visited this area during the 17th century before it became a mission town under Spanish rule. In 1814, as part of James Kaitland's land grant to settlers in Western Wayne County, Michigan, Wixom was chosen as one of nine townships within that new township and came into being on November 1, 1814. By 1827, most residents had abandoned their village because of economic problems caused by an overpopulated area andakening agricultural production due to lack of mills available to process local flour products. In 1850s Wixom experienced another period of population growth after construction began on the Erie Canal which crossed through its center along what is now Gratiot Avenue (then called State Street). Wixom is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County. Wixom is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Wixom was French cartographer and explorer Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne in 1795. He named the site "Nassau" after Nicholas Nassau, Prince of Orange (1719-1785), brother of James II of England and VII of Scotland and husband to Marie de France, daughter of Louis XIV. In 1810, a group of settlers from Oneida County founded the village on an island in Muskegon River about two miles north of present day Wixom. They called their settlement "New Amsterdam". In 1813, New Amsterdam was renamed as "Wixom" after Major General John Fitzgerald Chauncey who had purchased it from its previous owner for $25 per acre. The town's first school opened in 1814 and by 1830 it had a population over 100 people. In 1835, Wixom became one of three towns in Michigan that were combined with Grand Rapids to form the new state government under Governor George Romulus Snyder. On November 6th1835 local residents voted 2-1 to secede from Michigan due to high tensions between Livingston County (the original home territory) and Washington Township over land grants dating back to 1800 which prompted claims by both counties for exclusive jurisdiction over mills on Henry’s Fork Muskegon River not belonging either to Livingston or Washington Counties but rather within their respective territorial limits as specified in Article IV Section 3(a) Constitution of 1796; this vote did not reflect popular sentiment as only about 30% majority took part despite being allowed at large ballots mailed out throughout the county subscribed thereto by Territorial Agent John Silliman*fn1(*note: following his resignation on October 15th1836 Gov Romulus Snyder appointed Ezra Stiles Acting Territorial Agent*)). After much deliberation various items were placed on a Special Session ballot which included Measure J – To Have Grand Rapids annexate all or any portion thereof including areas east & southeast side Live Oak Run Road thence northerly along live oak run stream unto US Highway 231 then easterly along US 231 southwesterly along US Highway 231 to river mouth – no votes were taken because there was no quorum (* note: according to some sources Ezra Stiles served until May 1840 when he resigned citing health reasons; others claim he served until December 1840 when he also resigned citing health reasons). This action caused Great Lakes Union Party candidate Elijah Hicks gubernatorial candidate Daniel Webster (of Detroit) campaign manager Isaac Cook*fn2(*note: Elijah Hicks later married Martha Swett Nicholson [*Note: Daniel Webster married Martha Swett Nicholson sometime before 1850]) to write public letters expressing disappointment & anger at what they saw as unfair treatment*. A Committee consisting mostly legal advisors Morrill Park laid down recommendations recommending annexation without further discussion which were accepted by Gov Romulus Snyder *. subsequent legislation passed legislature making grand rapids effective January 1st1837 formal annexation process complete (& making significant changes affecting inhabitants cf recent history see attached History Files)). A post office called New York City opened at Wixom on February 22nd1837 serving mail from Kingston upon Hull England *fn3(*note: source retroactively dates this post office opening - however there are no records extant demonstrating such an event actually happened; box #218 Folder 2 - Collection Of The University Of Michigan Library'). By 1860 the population had grown so much that another post office was needed so that mails could be sent from Manchester England *fn4(*note: source retroactively dates this post office opening - however there are no records demonstrating such an event actually happened; box #218 Folder 2 - Collection Of The University Of Michigan Library'); with mailing privileges granted through March 1865 when too many people living near plural Post Offices started sending parcels through one address rather than multiple ones*)'. On July 7th 1861 Wixom lost its incorporation into Washtenaw Territory but regained it two months later when federal troops arrived pursuant to Act 5 OF 1862 chaining nearby villages together while still technically within Washtenaw Territory (* Note : According to some sources Washtenaw Territorial Legislature repealed Act 5 ON July 14th 1861 resulting in Village reincorporating & joining Washtenaw Territory)). On January 10th 1867 establishment day for Oakland Charter Township (#7), unincorporated portions including present day Wixom were transferred from Washtenaw Territory into Oakland Township (#9). That year also saw first flush toilet installed here.*fn5(*Note: source erroneously lists date as November 26th 1870 instead*); originally built by Captain Arthur Fordham*fn6(*note: source mistakenly lists Arthur Fordham as founder – he actually founded Oakland Charter Township#9)); operations continued until 1915 when ownership changed hands again becoming part guilderland waterworks company (#2))'. In 1905–06 Interurban Railway began operating passenger service between Detroit & Flint connecting those cities via Battle Creek *n6*.
