By 1860, Woodhaven had a population of just over 100 people. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thanks to its location on the southern border of Detroit and its position as an important transportation hub. In 1925, Woodhaven became part of the newly created city of Detroit. As Detroit’s population swelled, so did Woodhaven’s size. By 1960, Woodhaven had reached its current size – totaling over 1,000 residents – and it remains one of the most populous towns in Michigan today. Wood Haven is located within walking distance of many popular attractions such as Woodward Avenue and Lake Shore Boulevard. The community has a variety of cultural features that make it unique including a cheese factory (the only one in Michigan), a brewery/restaurant complex called “The Woods” (the largest restaurant in North America), and a number of historic homes dating back to before World War II. Additionally, Wood Haven offers an extensive public education system with six schools clustered around three downtown cores: One for pre-K through eighth grade; one for ninth through 12th grade; and one for high school students up to college levelismo).

However, since the 2000s, Woodhaven has been struggling with economic decline and population loss. Today, only a few hundred residents remain in what once was one of Michigan's largest communities. Woodhaven is known for its beautiful downtown district which is located on Lake Huron between Woodward Avenue and Grand Boulevard. The district is home to several high-end shops including Macy’s Department store which closed in 2009 but remains vacant today as part of an effort to rehab it. Additionally, there are several restaurants including Primavera Italian restaurant which opened in 1945 and still serves quality food today; The Pupiters bar & grill which opened in 1957; and Plus One pizzeria which reopened after being closed for over 20 years due to fire damage. Today, most people within Woodhaven interact with their local businesses or neighborhood associations through Parish Council meetings or social events that are held throughout each month throughout central Lansing County. Additionally, there are numerous historical programs available upon request that focus on aspects of our unique history such as walking tours of various buildings or learning about local agricultural methods used to produce crops such as cornmeal pudding (a specialty found at many restaurants).
The town of Woodhaven, Michigan was founded in 1853 by the Rev. James L. Ketchum and his wife, Miss Emma Cuthbert. The first post office was established in 1855 and the first store was built in 1858. The town grew rapidly after it was established and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1865, the town became a part of Kalamazoo County and its name changed to Woodhaven Township. In 1896, the township became an unincorporated community within Kalamazoo County and its name changed again to Woodhaven Township. The current community of Woodhaven was formed when the town of Grand Rapids merged into Kalamazoo County in 1998.
