Woodhaven is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Flint River. The population was 24,811 at the 2010 census. The history of Woodhaven began with pioneers who arrived in 1834 to purchase land along the Flint River from the Ottawa and Potawatomi tribes. They founded what is now known as Woodhaven Township on November 3, 1834. The township was named for Captain James Prentice, an American Revolutionary War veteran and founder of Detroit. In 1851, woodcarvers John Aiken and George Stephenson built a sawmill on the riverbank near present-day downtown Woodhaven for processing lumber from local trees. In 1859, Samuel Morse established a telegraph line through town that became one of America's first wire services. Morse's son Alfred developed electrical equipment here at his father's mill before moving it to transmit electricity over telephone wires in 1893. Woodhaven is a small town in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,435 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–onia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Woodhaven is named after Colonel John Wood (1788-1865), an early settler in the area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Macomb County were French traders and missionaries who landed on the Great Lakes in 1607. In 1796, General George Washington's army invaded Canada and reached Detroit; however, they did not stay long because of the strong Native American resistance. James Kempton founded Kempton Township in 1811 as a way to get settlers to his land east of Battle Creek between Mackinac Island and Green Bay. The first post office was established at Kempton Township in 1814. In 1827, Michigan became a state and Woodhaven became its capital city under Act No. 5 of that year. In 1830, it lost its status as capital when Lansing became the new state capital; but it regained its status by act of legislature on March 1, 1840 with President Zachary Taylor's proclamation giving it back to Woodaven on that date A fire destroyed most of the village center on November 15th 1896; however, local firefighters rebuilt it quickly using wood from nearby farms . The village had been hit hard bywidowhood and crop failures during those years due largely to harsh weather conditions which made for dense forests west of town where logging continued until about 1925 when prices peaked due to overgrazing by deer herds
