The history of shooters in Ypsilanti, Michigan goes back to the 1880s. There was a gunsmith who manufactured rifles and shotguns in the town. He would set up shop on the banks of the Muskegon River and sell his products to farmers and other hunters. The firearms were used by local residents for hunting, sport shooting, protection from Indians, and even self-defense. In 1903, Ypsilanti became an incorporated city with its own police department. As gun sales decreased in Ypsilanti as people began using handguns instead, thesmith closed his business in 1916. However, there are still a number of historically significant buildings in town that commemorate this time period. One such building is the former Southern Elm Building located at 209 E St., which was once home to the now defunct Ypsilanti Rifle & Shotgun Club (YRSC). The club met monthly at this location until it disbanded in 1941 due to World War II rationing. It is also worth noting that during World War II one of town’s primary exports was rifle ammunition; however, because handgun ownership increased after the war, ammo production ceased entirely within Ypsilanti between 1946 and 1949. Today there are multiple Shooting Centers open to all ages across Ypsilanti including experienced ranges for children as well as adult NRA courses/events/AZ Legislature tours inside Old State Armory on East Main Street where you can purchase or rent pistols/ammunition/shooting supplies etc….
