In 1892, the Minnesota Territorial Legislature authorized the creation of an army in Anoka. The first units of the new army were raised in 1894. The realignment of military districts in 1907 created a new unit for Anoka County called the "Anoka Volunteer Infantry Regiment." In 1911, the regiment was redesignated as the "Anoka National Guard Regiment." On July 1, 1920, the regiment was reorganized and redesignated as an infantry battalion within brigade Combat Team 2 of 3rd Infantry Division (U.S.) Army Corps of Engineers. On July 15, 1941, brigade Combat Team 2 became part of 5th Infantry Division (U.S.) Army Corps of Engineers and was organized into an infantry battalion again within brigade Combat Team 2 with Headquarters at Stillwater Barracks. In 1945, brigade Combat Team 2 became part of 7th Infantry Division (U.S.) Army Corps of Engineers and was reorganized into an infantry battalion once again within brigade Combat Team 2 with Headquarters at Stillwater Barracks- concurrently also becoming activated on October 16 as company A/7th Minnesota Rifles platoon activated at stillwater barracks to serve with 7th Infantry Division during World War II being reactivated on October 16 which is now known as Company A/7th Minnesota Light Infantry Battalion which is currently inactive since it has no active members left

The area now known as Anoka was first settled by men in 1836 and became a town in 1855. In 1881 Anoka became one of four townships within Dakota Territory when Dakota County was created from land westward acquired from Sioux and Ojibwe nations via treaty negotiations between America and Great Britain over claims surrounding Fort Snelling (present-day Milwaukee). Although its boundaries remain largely undefined today due to natural changes (including draining wetlands), much of what now makes up Anoka Township originated within what are now portions of South Stearns Township, Westmoreland Township and Hennepin Township – all counties within present day Minneapolis/St Paul metropolitan area.
