The first soldiers who arrived at Fort Snelling were soldiers from New York City who had been recruited to help fight against Native Americans in Dakota Territory. When war finally came toMinnesota, these New Yorkers joined up with other troops from across America to join forces with GeneralSnelling and his troops on July 6th, 1862. This battle marked the beginning of what would be an epic struggle against Native American resistance throughout Minnesota; it would continue until 1865 when General John A. Snelling surrendered at Red Lake Battlefield near present-day Superior University

Columbia Heights is an unincorporated community in Clearwater County, Minnesota, United States. It is located on the edge of the city of Minneapolis. The population was 269 as of the 2000 census. The Columbia Heights post office was discontinued in 1966 and has been replaced by MetroCenterspost Office at 5th and Nicollet avenues in Minneapolis. The name "Columbia Heights" may be derived from the fact that a large part of its residents were born there or have lived there for generations. One theory suggests that it derives from "Columbus Hill", which stands just south of town on a hill above Interstate 94 and Interstate 55 (the main thoroughfare through Columbia Heights). Another theory claims that it comes from Columbia River, because many people who live near where Nicollet Avenue meets I-94 come from industry in southern Minnesota along the river valley. The first settler in what would become Columbia Heights was James Aiken, who arrived around 1868. He built a small log cabin on his farmstead about one-half mile east of present day Columbia Heights Boulevard. In 1871, Aiken married Mathilde Olson and they moved to their current location near 4th Street and Nicollet Avenue. By 1875, other pioneer families had also arrived in what would become Columbia Heights: John Hennepin, John Lundberg, Rasmus Norell, Ole Hanson and others. In 1876, two brothers named William Hennepin bought land contiguous with James Aiken's farmstead; this area became known as Hennepin Square (now called Snelling Park). As more settlers arrived in Columbia Heights over time, they started to build similar sized homes – some up to three stories high – with gardens ornamenting their yards or front porches.. Over time these homes grew into neighborhoods comprising about 100 households including many prominent citizens such as Charity Hospital founder Andrew Carnegie and banker Jens Jacobsen Sr.. Many early residents became involved politically throughout most of the 20th century including Mayor Edwin Guthrie (1912-15), Superintendent George Magnuson (1920-24), councillor Byron Nelson (1945-48) and state legislator George Carlson (1951-55). In 1926 when Minneapolis began construction on downtown streetsigns which included four blocks running north/south between University Avenue/Hwy 290 & Nicollet Avenue/I-94W junction - much activity took place within neighborhood boundaries due to various elected officials hosting ribbon cutting ceremonies for various projects taking place within those boundaries e.g., new library building construction etc... Today few if any active civic organizations remain within Neighborhood District #1 - though many members still attend monthly meetings organized by VD#2 representatives tasked with maintaining physical infrastructure & energizing activities
In 1851, land was donated by the Lynde and Harry Kelley family to build a town on the site. The town was named Columbia Heights after Columbia University in New York City. The first settler, John Rolfe, arrived in 1852 and started a small farm near the present day intersection of Washington Avenue and 8th Street. In 1865, the city purchased 1/8 of mile (1 km) of land from Rolfe for $100. This area became known as “Rolfe’s Row” because it served as the center of town until development began along Washington Avenue in the late 1800s. Columbia Heights experienced its heyday during World War I when local businesses generated employment for many residents. However, crime rates in Columbia Heights increased during this time period which led to several attempts at redevelopment that never succeeded. The population of Columbia Heights peaked at over 10,000 in 1930 but declined thereafter due to both social and economic problems. In 1959, Columbia Heights amalgamated with nearby Maplewood to form a new municipality known as Maplewood-Columbia Heights which still exists today.
