Shakopee, Minnesota is a village in Douglas County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,994 at the 2010 census. Shakopee is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The name Shakopee comes from the Sioux word "sha-ka-pee," meaning "place of peace." The Village was laid out in 1871 by George Washington Forbes and named for his father (and founder of Forbes magazine). The first post office opened in 1872, and the first store opened in 1875. The current school building was built in 1907. It served as a high school until it closed in 1988 and became a community college. In 2009, it lost its charter to become an unincorporated community again under state law because of too few residents living there according to traditional town functions like policing and firefighting services
On July 1, 1851, Shakopee was founded by a group of fur traders. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1876, Shakopee became the county seat of Ramsey County.
