The Biloxi, Mississippi Coast Guard has been providing service to the Gulf of Mexico and its surrounding region for over 100 years. The Coast Guard is responsible for protecting maritime resources, investigating marine accidents and crimes, assisting with search and rescue missions, and providing humanitarian assistance. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has enjoyed generous donations from individuals and businesses in Biloxi. Some of these donations have helped to build important infrastructure such as a port and detention center; improve safety on the gulf; provide training for coast guard officers; or support medical relief efforts. In 2016 alone, the Coast Guard received a total of $2 million in donations from citizens in Biloxi. This generosity is an essential part of our mission to protect maritime resources and ensure public safety. Today, the Coast Guard operates 13 patrol boats, five helicopters, four landing craft (LCTs), two medium size vessels (MSV’s), three supply ships (SSN-621’s/ -624’s)and one large ship (HCM-46) along with many other support capabilities including communications technology upgrades. These assets help keep our community safe while helping us respond to emergencies that could impact any area of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Coast Guard gift history dates back to at least 1917 when a group of officers and men from the New York State Division of Fisheries bought a small boat called the Chief. The California Coastal Guard followed suit in 1935 and purchased their first vessel, the Pilar, which was used for patrols along the California coast. In 1957, the Coast Guard purchased their first helicopter, which they named Charlie. In 1978, the Coast Guard organized their own Gift Shop within Headquarters Command. Afterward, Biloxi struggled to return to its former prominence as a manufacturing and commerce center. However, it has since recovered and now constitutes one of the most significant communities in Gulf County. Biloxi’s history began with slaves brought over from Africa beginning in 1802. By 1835, almost all of the slaves who had been taken to Biloxi had been sold or died from disease or accident. The city was first established as a trading post on the Yazoo River by Captain John Browning and his men following their victory over General Andrew Jackson’s forces at New Orleans in 1836. In 1848, Governor James Kelleher granted town status to Biloxi under section 8 of the federal Constitution; this allowed for local self-government without interference from Washington D.C.. In 1865, when Mississippi seceded from the United States, Biloxi remained an Indian Territory under direct control of Native Americans until 1898 when it became part of Gulf County when that county was created from parts of Mobile and Baldwin counties. The early years of Biloxi were difficult due to lack of resources and competition from other slave ports ontheMississippi River such as New Orleans and Memphis. However, by 1850,BILOXI had become one ofthe leading cotton producing areas in America due to its location on estuary banks between two tidal rivers which gave it access to high quality water supplies needed for cotton cultivation
