Biloxi, Mississippi is a small town located in Delta County, Mississippi. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. Biloxi was founded in 1838 by Dutch family of fishermen and merchants. The first post office was established in 1839. It became a city on December 15, 1903 with the incorporation of the city of Biloxi by an act of the state legislature. The name "Biloxi" originated from an Indian word meaning "a place where there is plenty of fish". The City Council voted to change its name to Gulfport on October 2, 1984. The history of Biloxi began with Danish fisherman who started fishing here in 1838. They brought their catch back to Denmark and sold it as seafood for export. In 1893, Jens Jensen organized a company which built brick warehouses for shipping salt water cargoes from Block Island Sound to New Orleans and Mobile Bayou (now Jackson). This company became known as Jensen & Company and later changed its name to Gulfport Navigation Company Ltd., then Gulfport Shipping Corporation Ltd.. In 1912, Gulfport Shipping Corporation purchased Block Island Sound cargo docks from American Commercial Lines for $2 million dollars which made it one of the largest private enterprise shipping companies in America at that time. In 1935-1936, local businessmen formed the Magnolia Broadcasting System which aired programming outof Biloxi through WABE-TV (NBC) throughout much of Delta County including Biloxi itself before moving operations ashore into facilities on First Street within minutes of collapse following Hurricane Katrina's landfall on August 29th 2005
