Brookhaven is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,915 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Brookhaven was founded in 1853 by Hugh Waddell and his family as a cotton plantation called "Hilton." The name of the town may come from the holly tree that once grew on the property. The first post office in Brookhaven was established in 1858, and it remained operational until 1907. In 1865, militia officer James A. Armstrong purchased land east of Brookhaven from John Sibley for $2,000. Armstrong renamed his new community "Armstrong" after himself and built homes there which remain standing to this day. In 1868, Armstrong married Elizabeth Stephenson and they had two children: James H., who became an accomplished lawyer; and Sarah E., who also became an accomplished attorney. In 1892 Hampton & Hutchinson (later renamed Hutchinson) began operating a flour mill west of Brookhaven on current-day US Highway 82 just south of its intersection with Hammond Road. This mill continued operation until 1951 when it went out of business due to competition from larger mills in nearby Jackson. The mill site is now occupied by Ivey's Drugs Inc., a local grocery store/takeout restaurant chain occupant since 1984 On July 16th 1861 , three men - Ishmael Lowndes (a slave), George Washington Dixon (a free man), and John Whitefield Rankin - were fatally shot while walking near Enterprise Plantation southwest of present day Hammond Road in what is now known as Rankin Springs approximately 8 miles northeast of Birmingham, Alabama . rankin springs plantation contains remains today dated back to 1850
