The town gradually grew and by the early 1800s had become a major center for cotton plantations in the area. In 1885, Brookhaven became an incorporated municipality and remained that way until it was annexed by Jackson, Mississippi in 1907. A large sector of Jackson's economy derived from its slave trade; however, slavery ended in America during the Civil War and most of Mississippi reverted to open land after that event. The towns of Brookhaven and Yazoo City were among those lost to history when Jackson was annexed into Alabama in 1907. The first residents of Brookhaven were white farmers who arrived around 1837. By 1865, black slaves had formed a majority of its population and this section of Mississippi has been called "the Black Belt" due to this fact. Mobile County - which includes much of what is today Brookhaven - was one of the few areas in America where slavery continued until 1865.During Reconstruction times (1868-1871), many African Americans emigrated to northern states such as Illinois or Minnesota because they felt their circumstances there were better than those they experienced south of the Mason-Dixon Line. However, most blacks returned south after Reconstruction ended, creating a problem for Brooksville officials who wanted them all back within their community. This issue led to friction between black residents and white ones for years thereafter. After World War II, Brookhaven again became a small town with few native citizens remaining because so many local businesses closed down during that time period due to competition from larger cities such as Jackson or Memphis .
