Canton, Mississippi is a town in the US state of Mississippi. The population was 8,545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rankin County. Canton was founded in 1819 by Captain James Waddell and his party of volunteers as a post on an east-west road between Natchez and Mobile. The name Canton derives from "Canandaigua" (present-day Albany) in upstate New York, where Waddell had been born in 1784. In 1821, when it became part of Jackson County, Canton's first white settler was John Hinton. The first store opened in 1824 and the first school in 1827. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters to nearby Vicksburg and named Canton its new county seat; he also ordered the building of a courthouse and jail there. By 1840, Canton had over 100 residents including many frame houses built for farmers who grew cotton crops along the river banks near their homes. The Panic of 1893 hit Mississippi hard; within two years only 4% of all business had reopened because investors were short on cash to pay debts mounting from previous years' crop failures. Many small businesses closed completely while others went out of business altogether due to competition from larger companies that could pay their creditors with money they already had lying around or received as gifts from friends or family members such as sharecroppers or merchants who owned prosperous plantations elsewhere in Mississippi or Louisiana

The town was destroyed by a tornado on November 25, 1936.

However, this prosperity ended when General Robert E Lee arrived in Mississippi to lead Confederate forces during the Battle of Shiloh and subsequent campaigns against Union forces throughout North America. In 1896-97 an act of Congress designated Canton as a seat for white women who had borne children out of wedlock within 5 miles of any U.S., state or territory outside The District of Columbia (i.e.: all states east of Missouri). This provision applied only to white women who resided inside Kentucky or Tennessee; black women did not gain citizenship until 1973 when they received voting rights under Section 5of the Voting Rights Act Amendments passed by Congress
