The name "Clarksdale" evolved from a planter's term for the Iuka Plantation where General Andrew Jackson was born in 1775, and derived from Claiborne County (now Wilkinson County) in which it lay. The first post office in Clarksdale was established on July 1, 1881, and remained open until February 15, 1886. A new post office building was built at present-day Patterson Avenue and Meridian Street in 1902. In 1906, railroad tracks were extended through town and renamed the Memphis & Charleston Railway after its directors—George Wirtz and J P Morgan—who had invested heavily in that company during Reconstruction. At that time there were only five houses within town limits; by 1940 there were over 100 residents living within its limits alone. During World War II Clarksdale served as a steel plant center for munitions production due to its location close to several factories used for that purpose by both American and Axis forces. After the war ended many of those factories closed down or shifted production to other countries but Clarksdale continued to experience high levels of economic activity thanks to new industries such as auto manufacturing which began arriving here during the late 1960s when Interstate 20 replaced old Route 66 as Mississippi's primary highway artery
