The Cleveland, Mississippi Naval Militia was once a part of the United States Navy. The first naval militia unit in the United States was created on July 3, 1795 when President George Washington authorized the creation of three naval militias to provide security for American ports and harbors. These militias were modeled after the British Royal Marines and were known as “the yellow Jackets” due to their color (yellow being the national color of England). In 1824, Congress passed an act authorizing the formation of a navy stationed in Cleveland, Mississippi. This act gave rise to one of the most famous military events in American history- The Battle of Brownsville. In this battle, Commodore James K. Polk led an expedition against Spanish forces at Brownsville Bayou. After successfully leading his force ashore and defeating the Spanish defenders, Polk became America’s first Ulysses S. Grant – considered by many to be one of America’s greatest generals. Today, both the navy stationed in Cleveland and its museum are still active with significant presence within our community today.
