Columbus, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first white European to set foot in what is now Columbus was John Cotesworth Knight on July 12, 1814 when he and his party of seven men explored an area that would become known as "The Forks". They found Native Americans here and were forced to leave by force. Knight's party also discovered the valuable oil well at Lampasas Basin but this discovery was not made public until 1859. Columbus began trading with other areas of the Gulf Coast region and by 1815 had a post office, schoolhouse, and store. In 1830 Columbus became an organized town under a new government which included citizens from other towns in Jackson County. The settler's elected officials were one Councilman and four trustees who administered justice in their absence. In 1840 Columbus annexed the village of Springdale which was located two miles west of its present location. This annexation caused some controversy because Springdale had been completely white when it annexation happened and it has been claimed that black people could not have taken over the town because they did not exist then or there would be no history of race relations in Columbus (Sanders). There are no records to support this claim however; according to historian Donnellan Rice Jr., "All evidence suggests that blacks did take over [Springdale] only after being welcomed into society by whites." In 1851 Franklin Dyer established a cotton gin on land patented to him by General Andrew Jackman near present day Decatur Boulevard and Tomlinson Road which led directly to economic success for Columbus during the 19th century (Sanders). After Dyer's death in 1865 he bequeathed his mill complex including over fifty buildings - many still standing today - along with 160 acres (72 ha) of land east of downtown Columbus which was used for agricultural purposes until 1966 when it reverted back to state control (Sanders). According to Rice Jr., "Dyer laid out plans for Columbus that remain essentially unchanged today" including building streetscape features such as piers extending into Lake Pontchartrain while preserving natural resources like streamside plantations housing hogs, chickens, horses and crop dusters among others ( Sanders ). Mrs. Julia Atherton donated her home on University Avenue south of downtown Columbus in 1957 for use as a museum about African American history withinJackson County (). The Africatown Museum opened its doors on October 6th 1976 under leadership from Drs . Clarence Hilliard & Sanford Witherspoon Morehouse who served as Executive Director from 1978-1982 When Drs . Hilliard & Morehouse left office they were succeeded by Mr . James Mclntyre who continued operations until 1990 Before leaving office he donated all remaining artifacts from Africatown Museum including library materials along with $225K check made payable To The Negro History Museum Incorporated
