Poston, owner of the Poston Firearms store on Jackson Street in downtown Gautier. The shotgun would be used as an agricultural tool until it was donated to the Gautier Historical Society in 1966 and is currently stored at the society's Arms and Armor Museum. The next gun purchase in Gautier’s history occurred within two years of Hickey’s shotgun purchase when A.P. Taylor purchased a Winchester lever-action rifle from Mr. Poston for $50 cash. The Winchester rifle would later be gifted to the GHS by its current owner, Mrs. Jules Bourgeois, after she inherited it from her husband, Capt James Bourgeois Jr., during his death in 1984. Another gift which has been given to the societymultiple times is an Italian carbine known as “the Calico Gun” which was originally owned by Judge Willis Polk and delivered to him by wagonload directly from Italy between 1885 and 1889 following his visit there that year on behalf of Mississippi Governor Larkin Thompson Sr.. Gautier is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,566 at the 2010 census. Gautier is located on the banks of the Pearl River. It was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1810 as a trading post on the Pearl River. The name "Gautier" means "place where there are many trees." Gordon B. Woodruff, who served as president of the University of Mississippi from 1926 to 1961 and who was born in Gautier, said: "When I first came here (to Oxford), Mississippi, it had no university and very few people. Here I found more students than anywhere else in America." In 1925, Woodward also became director of education for Jackson County and led its effort to open a university in Gautier. The first classes were held at the old Community Schoolhouse on December 3, 1925; Gaudette Hall opened on February 9, 1926 with $1 million donated by J.P Morgan & Company. In 1969-1970 PrenticeHall Inc., an American educational software company moved its headquarters from Englewood Cliffs NJ to Greenwood Village CO due to increasing competition from universities such as Stanford and MIT which had opened their own campuses across America during that time frame. During this same time period Jim Wollaston who ran PrenticeHall's international office relocated his family from England to Greenwood Village so they could be closer to their childrens' school and continue working with computers even though they were now older adults! People like Wollaston made Greenwood Village one of Silicon Valley's early enclaves - home to some of the world's top technology companies during its earliest years! Prior to then most Silicon Valley startups started out as innovative ideas hatched by young entrepreneurs fresh out of college or graduate school - not coming down through expensive moves into downtown Palo Alto Gate Street HQ! Gautier was founded in 1819 by Jean Baptiste Gautier and his family. The town became a center for cotton production and served as the capital of Mississippi from 1821 to 1825. Although it had no state government, Gautier remained an important center for white Mississippians because it was the first place in the region to develop a school system. In 1865, Gautier came under Federal control as part of the Louisiana Purchase and was renamed Monroe County. It residents elected a sheriff and two representatives to the U.S. Congress until 1871 when they were replaced by freedmen. In 1898, Gautier passed away after a long battle with cancer. By 1925, its population had decreased to only 100 people while its economy faltered due to lack of industry and agriculture. However, it remains an important local community that still experiences significant growth today.
Gautier, Mississippi was founded in 1853 by James A. Gautier and his wife, Letitia. The town was named after Gautier's ancestor, Jean-Baptiste Gautier, who had settled in the area in 1819. The first settler in Gautier was Frenchman Fenton Banks. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Tennessee River, which made it an important transportation hub for goods travelling up and down the river. Many of Gautier's early residents were involved in the cotton plantation industry. In 1901, the town became a part of Jackson County and began to experience rapid growth as a result of its proximity to Jackson City and other nearby towns. In 1951, Gautier became a city and retains this status today
