By 1860, Gautier had become one of the leading ports on the Gulf Coast with significant shipping activity taking place along its shores. This prosperity led some citizens to start their own companies within this burgeoning industry including HMS Supply Co., which manufactured supplies for vessels operating along the Mississippi River system. Gautier is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Hinds County and part of the Jackson Micropolitan Statistical Area. Gautier was founded by General Andrew Jackson on November 2, 1817 as a military post near present-day Starkville. In 1824, Gautier became an incorporated town with a population of 704 people. In 1881, Gautier was renamed for Jean Baptiste Rousseau after he donated land to its founders for a school and cemetery. The name "Rousseau" was chosen because it sounded similar to François Boissot's name and title of "Grand Vicar." In 1902, Gautierre erected the first electric light system in Mississippi. The town's first library opened in 1903 and its first grocery store in 1907. The city hall building replaced an old log courthouse that had been destroyed by fire in 1896. A new high school also was built in 1912 and named for General James Kountz (1819-1900), who had served as president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1893 until his death during World War I. Kountz played an important role in creating modern cotton agriculture and infrastructure throughout Mississippi The increasing popularity of Ford automobiles led to increased demand for goods and services available within Gautiere limits; this led to businesses expanding their operations into adjacent towns such as Starkville or Tupelo. With more residents living within one small area, schools became more important than ever before; with two high schools (one public and one private) open since 1912, many residents completed college degrees while still living within their community boundaries However - like most communities - some aspects of life did not fares well over time due primarily to budget cuts initiated by then-Mayor/City Council Member Don Dixon following the economic recession which hit Gulf Coast states particularly hard during that time period today there are few but active businesses left along Clinton Avenue inside City Hall including several antique stores all closed up years ago...the lone restaurant remaining open now is a family run grocery store known simply as 'The Store'.
