Navy gift history in Gautier, Mississippi began with the purchase of a Naval Shipyard tugboat in 1853. The shipyard was established to build warships for the United States Navy. The first ship built at the Naval Shipyard was USS Constitution (1857). In 1865, the Naval Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was founded in Gautier and began building ships for the Confederate Navy. The company produced over 100 vessels during its heyday. The Union Navy captured USS Mississippian (1865) in a battle off Mobile Bay and renamed her CSS Alabama (1866). USS Gideon Peabody (1868) was commissioned as a flagship of Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter's Squadron Commander Flotilla 1st Fleet at Pensacola, Florida on September 8th, 1868. On November 12th, 1869 she participated in an engagement against combined Confederate forces off Cape Canaveral. CSS Alabama lost three men killed, 11 wounded and one missing overboard when her engine room caught fire while under attack by two Confederate torpedo boats. On January 3rd 1870 Commodore James Fenton arrived at Mobile from New Orleans with his squadron to join Rear Admiral Porter's Squadron Commander Flotilla 2nd Fleet which had blockaded Cuban ports along the Gulf of Mexico coast awaiting war supplies from Havana. On February 14th Commodore Fenton met Rear Admiral Porter near Havana Harbor and agreed to become subordinate to him as Commander-in-Chief of US naval forces afloat in Cuba pending successful removal of that country by American troops under General Ulysses S Grant who had landed ashore there four days earlier on February 10th 1870 after successfully capturing Santiago de Cuba on February 7th 1870!!!!! Commodore Fenton agreed to this request knowing he would be responible for all operations within Cuba including those concerning minesweeping and blockadearding purposes….. Inauguration ceremonies were held on April 12th 1870 when Commodore James Fenton assumed command of US naval forces afloat in Cuba effective upon his arrival….Fenton led a force consisting of 22 battleships/destroyers/submarines; 15 cruisers; 13 monitors; 10 supply ships; 9 transports; 7 frigates;; 4 gunboats;; 3 sloops;; 1 bark)))))) USS Gideon Peabody Commissioned into service with Squadron Commander Flotilla 1st Fleet docked at Pensacola Fla., Sept 8 '68

Gautier is a town in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Frenchmen who took up land in this area in 1815 and named it Gautier after Jean-Baptiste Gaultier, a Frenchman who had come to the region as a trader. The first post office in Gautier was established on November 12, 1824, and remained open until it closed on May 3, 1865. The town was incorporated on July 1, 1852. The first school in Gautier was built in what is now downtown and operated for one year before being replaced by a public school that continued to serve the community until 1903 when it became known as the First Baptist Church School. In 1907 a sawmill complex was constructed which remains one of the most important buildings within Gautier today. It also became home to Gaudreau Chevrolet from 1951-1963 when the company moved its production operations from Jackson to nearby Pascagoula. In 1964 Gaudreau relocated again with their manufacturing operations to Muscle Shoals Alabama where they remain present to this day
When the United States Navy was founded in 1775, it had no shipyards to build warships. The navy needed ships to protect its coasts and waters, but there were no adequate materials or tools available. So, the navy resorted to buying other countries' ships and then converting them into warships. This practice continued until the early 20th century when America built its first own shipyard. The USS Constitution (1797) was the first U.S. naval vessel to be completed at a Shipbuilder's Dock in Philadelphia. After serving as a training ship for new officers and sailors, she was commissioned into service on October 14, 1797. She played an important role in the American Revolution by providing cover for merchant vessels and coastal towns from British attack. In 1805 she served as flagship of Commodore James Wilkinson's fleet off Veracruz during the Mexican-American War; her actions helped win that war against Mexico and gain independence for the United States of America. After leaving active service in 1810, CSS Virginia (1812) served as a Museum Ship at Hampton Roads until sold for scrap in 1865. USS Constitution Museum (1967-1997), now located at Naval History Center Portsmouth NH, is one of only two remaining instances where a U.S.-built warship has been preserved permanently outside of North America proper (the other being HMS Victory). The museum houses more than 2 million artifacts including uniforms, equipment, documents and photos from both world wars II up through today’s conflicts The Constitution Museum opened its doors on November 12th 1967 with just over $1 million dollars from philanthropist Dr John Kingsbury III along with help from volunteers who worked weekdays beginningJanuary 1st 1968 On May 15th 1977 Rear Admiral Harry Harris assumed command following Vice Admiral Halsey's retirement The museum closedan additional 5 times due to high expenses associated with keeping it open while also accommodating changing needs such as exhibits related to Navy Seal killings during Operation Neptune's Spear starring Jon Voight

Gautier, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1849 by white men looking for land to farm after the Battle of Arkansas Post. The name Gautier comes from French meaning " landing place." Gautier was incorporated as a village in 1867 and had a population of just over 100 residents when it lost its charter as a town on December 15, 1907. In 1902, Gautier became one of twelve towns in Jackson County that were consolidated with Tunica to form the Jackson metropolitan area. The merger increased the size of the city by twenty-one percent and led to an increase in employment opportunities for people living nearJackson Municipal Airport. In 1976, Gautier voted to become an independent city once again and has since remained sovilite without any annexation attempts from other municipalities within or outside of Jackson County. In 2001, Gautier became host to the Miss America pageant which took place at Tunica Municipal Auditorium and remains one of only two cities (the other being Biloxi) outside of Mississippi that have hosted such an event since its inception in 1957.
