By 1889, the town had grown to over 100 residents and a school was built. In 1916, Greenville became a county seat and its first mayor was elected. The last mayor of Greenville served from 1975 to 1993. The economy of Greenville has been based mostly on agriculture since it was founded. Today, local manufacturers include bird feeders and flour mills; however, some businesses have closed or moved away due to competition from other towns in the Jackson metropolitan area. Greenville, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 8,820 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,822 people living in Greenville proper and 3,078 people living in those nearby rural areas. In 2000 there were also 2 schools and 1 hospital located in Greenville proper. In 2007 the population had increased to 9,043 residents and 4 full-time jobs within walking distance from every home. The history of Greenville goes back to 1819 when it came under English control as part of the Louisiana Purchase from France. After independence was gained by the United States in 1820, it became a part of Mississippi Territory until July 11th 1830 when it joined Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) as part of that state's effort to secure more land for white settlers. When Indian Territory was reorganized into Alabama Territory on March 4th 1831 due to Mexican claims against Texas - including what is now Hinds County - Greenville became a county seat with its current boundaries set on April 12th 1832 after Jefferson Davis selected it as his new capital city for all newly organized Alabama Territories despite being unincorporated at that time. The first courthouse was built on State Street and served as county seat until November 10th 1840 when Mobile became its permanent successor due to its larger population base and establishment of an adobe courthouse which still stands today (albeit used mostly for storage). Greenville was founded in 1819 by Hugh Grigsby and his brothers. The town had a population of around 100 people when it was first established. It quickly grew, and by 1830 the population had reached 1,500 people. In 1835, Greenville became an incorporated town with a government led by a board of commissioners. By 1840, the population had increased to 2,000 people. The town experienced rapid growth until the mid-1850s, when it began to decline due toAHousing crisis and other factors. However, the town continued to grow rapidly through the 1860s and 1870s until its peak in 1880 at 3,500 people. However, during this time period many of Greenville's wealthiest citizens left for Mississippi because of theirovertyand lack of opportunity in Arkansas. After 1880 thetown decreased in size and struggled into the late 1800s before slowly dying out again throughout most of the 19th century.
