Greenville, Mississippi is a town of over 20,000 residents and has been a military deployment destination for more than 30 years. The city’s history with the military goes back to World War II when the U.S. Army established Camp Bearden in the heart of Greenville. In 1957, the United States Marine Barracks were built in what was then known as Bearden Park and served as home to the Marines until 1971 when it was transferred to the Navy. From there, Greenville became an active duty military installation before being sold to Gulfport-Biloxi Marine Corps Base in 2003 and serving as Headquarters for III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) from 2006-2013. As part of III MEF, Greenville was also responsible for training Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) during Operations Neptune’s Spear and Isis al-Sham (2011). Additionally, while at I MEF Headquarters, Greenville was home to 3d Brigade Combat Team 1st Cavalry Regiment which provides support for Operation Wolf Pack (2015-2018). In 2019, IV Corps command transferred I MEF Headquarters from Biloxi Bayou City to Greenville Municipal Airport due to increased security threats posed by Venezuela’s Maduro regime. This event marks an increase in deployments within III MEF since its inception - previous deployments have occurred at Camp Bearden or Biloxi Bayou City locations. Although such large installations require multiple headquarters buildings on two separate campuses that can accommodate up to 5500 people each; IV Corps Command decided that moving Headquarters would be simpler and quicker than renovating both locations simultaneously and made this move permanent effective September 1stth 2019. With III MEF now headquartered in Greenville proper; VIII Corps will have its primary headquarters location located just across Interstate 10 from downtown – making it easier for commanders on all levels access both sites without having undue impact on traffic or commuting patterns within our community( ). As one of only a few municipalities within Mississippi whose history with military deployment dates back beyond World War II; Greenville has long been associated with service members who have gone off into battle or who have returned home after their time serving abroad. Greenville is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,542 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County.
