These patrols were intended not only to protect our allies but also posed a threat to any nation who might attempt to do us harm (Kappeler 2002; Wright 2006b). Despite these challenges, the town remains an important cultural center for Mississippians of all races, hosting annual music festivals as well as blues concerts and other events throughout the year.
Greenwood is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is located on the Natchez Trace Parkway. The first inhabitants of what is now Greenwood were the Creek people who lived along the Natchez Trace River before migrating to Arkansas in 1819 and then to Mississippi in 1821. The first white settler in Greenwood was John Roebuck, who arrived in 1827. A post office called Greenwood was established in 1830, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. Greenwood saw some early growth due to its location on the Natchez Trace Parkway which allowed for easy access by travelers and also made it an ideal spot for cotton farming. The town grew rapidly after Congress voted to establish a road through Jackson County in 1902-03 as part of highway projects aimed at boosting commerce and development throughout the county. In 1919, General Motors built a factory on Red Road near present day I-10 just south of downtown Greenwood; this helped spurrowth within the town as GM began producing vehicles here rather than travelling to Muscle Shoals or Mobile
