Grenada, Mississippi is a small town in the Gulf Coast region of Mississippi. The population was 2,564 at the 2000 census. Grenada is located on US Highway 98, about 10 miles west of Gulfport and 25 miles southeast of Biloxi. The first recorded settlement in Grenada was established by Frenchmen in 1699. The town was granted to the United States by the Treaty of Paris in 1803 as part of Florida Purchase. It became part of Mississippi Territory when that territory was organized on March 1, 1824. On May 15, 1836, Grenada reverted to British possession following a military victory over American forces at Battle of New Orleans during the Mexican-American War. In 1842, President James K. Polk ordered construction of Fort Jackson on Bayou St John near present-day Savannah in order to bolster American naval efforts against France and Spain while they were engaged in their own wars with Mexico and Cuba respectively. The fort served as a base for operations until it was surrendered to Spanish forces January 8, 1898 after a three-month siege and capture by US Marines under General Zachary Taylor during the Spanish–American War. Although little remains standing from early grenadians such as trading posts and churches dating back to before 1800 AD due to repeated vandalism by both local residents and developers over time; much evidence exists documenting cultural aspects associated with this period including oral histories collected through interviews conducted with descendants living today along with archived materials from parish archives across central Mississippian County long ago! In 1851 Clements Creek [now known asOXFORD CREEK] flowing into Yazoo River formed an oxbow lake which would later be drained for agricultural purposes turning what had once been an open water body into one today know variously as "Muddy Water Fords" or "Old Sanford Road". This event significant because it showed that although deepwater ebbs and flows might occur periodically within inland waterways often defined geographically as watersheds; large bodies of water like Oxfords Creek/Creek or notorious Mobile Bay could also become temporarily isolated due riverine flooding particularly given cranberry barren soils which hindered cultivation below floodplain levels making access difficult if not impossible! Grenada, Mississippi is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Mississippi. The population was 1,507 at the 2010 census. Grenada is part of the Jackson metropolitan area and has been served by the Ole Miss campus for over 110 years. The first Europeans to visit what is now Grenada were French on December 12, 1795. They named it after a island in the Caribbean Sea that they had seen while sailing home from their unsuccessful attempt to explore this new world beyond their current borders. The island was not discovered until 1798 when Captain James Cook passed through on his second voyage and named it Grenada after one of his possessions in France – Saint-Domingue (present day Haiti). In 1802, Grenada became part of United States because Spain ceded its claim to that territory following its victory in the Mexican–American War. As part of this arrangement, Grenada received US citizenship on October 14th, 1802. Because sugar plantations were then an important industry in Louisiana and Mississippi, many people from these states moved to Grenada during this time as well. The first brick building in what is now Grenada was built by local residents in 1859. It functioned as a school until 1865 when a Masonic Lodge began using it as their meeting place for religious services and other purposes before finally being abandoned for good in 1922 due to lack of use and cost concerns among member families. 1
