The Grenada National Guard was first organized on January 10, 1965 in response to the Watts Riots of Los Angeles. At that time, there were only a few hundred Guardsmen in Grenada and they were largely relegated to ceremonial duties. The Guard was renamed the Grenada Militia on October 1, 1970 after being mobilized for the first time in response to the May 1968 riots in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In 1979, following an invitation from then-President Maurice Bishop, the Guardsmen from Saint Lucia traveled to Grenada and served as volunteers for two months before returning home. On July 4th of that year, President Bishop designated the Guardsmen of Trinidad and Tobago as part of a Caribbean solidarity mission to help quell violence in Martinique. The Guardsmen arrived at their destination on September 15th and spent twelve days helping with security followups upon their departure two weeks later. On January 25th, 1985, Commander-in-Chief Captain John Cavanaugh led a contingent of Guardsmen into Mississippi during a peacekeeping mission which lasted one week. The visit marked the beginning of Operation Timberwolf which ended with no fatalities when 30 military personnel were killed during clashes between Iraqi insurgents and UPI news cameramen west of Baghdad. Commanding Officer Captain David Auyeke returned home to Grenada on February 9th after serving three tours in Iraq as an advisor with Special Forces Group Delta (SFG Delta). He replaced Captain Cavanaugh as Commanding Officer on May 1st, 2005 following his retirement from service due to ill health. In his tenure as CO.,Captain Auyeke helped develop new doctrines for infantry drill/combat training along with developing new guidelines for equipment use within units including night operations and counter insurgency tactics utilizing assets such as helicopters and vessels support services known popularly as Maritime Force Support Operations (MFSO). Since its inception it has been through many changes both good and bad; but always maintaining its identity managed by its members who have given everything for their country’s defense culture is what has kept it going throughout these years

The Grenada National Guard was organized on November 17, 1964. The first unit was raised in Mississippi on December 3, 1964. The Mississippi National Guard first deployed to Grenada on January 8, 1965 as a result of the Invasion of Grenada by United States forces. The unit performed security duties and assists with the reconstruction process following the invasion. On May 25, 1985, the Mississippi National Guard detachment deployed to Grenada as part of Operation Desperate Hope in support of relief efforts following Hurricane Rita. After arriving in the country, the detachment served as advisors to local organizations and participated in numerous photo-ops and conducts relief work throughout the island. In 1996, after being stationed in St. Christopher Parish for over 10 years, the brigade redeployed to Gulfport where they will serve until May 2001 when they are again deploying to Grenada as part ofOperation Noble Eagle II.
Grenada, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 2,903 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community's name comes from Grenada Island which is located in the Gulf of Mexico just off the coast of Mississippi. The island was first settled by French colonists in 1699 and named for Maurice de la Vallière, Sieur de la Vallière. In 1784, a group of British Loyalists who had fled to Louisiana decided to settle on Grenada Island after being displaced from their original land base in Mobile Bayou. They called the settlement "New Orleans" but it quickly became known as "Grenada". The island was eventually abandoned by both French and British colonists because of its lack of resources and difficult navigation conditions. However, some cells of Spanish colonists continued to live there until 1831 when they were forced to leave due to American annexation of Florida. In 1837, a group of Mississippians led by John Gourdine founded what would become Grenada Township on what is now the eastern side of Grenada Island. The township was renamed for James Auld who served as mayor from 1836-38 and 1840-42; he also helped lay out the present town center site. Auld died in office before he could take his seat on the township board so another person stepped up and took his place during his lifetime – successful businessman Ezekiel Witherspoon Jr., who served as mayor from 1851-54 and 1860-64). In 1893, Witherspoon donated 640 acres (2 km²) southeast corner lot on State Road 436 (now Veterans Memorial Drive) between US Hwy 82/I-10 exit 444 eastbound / I-10 exit 9 westbound for continuous development that would be called Old Town Township which would include all or most parts of present day Grenada including current day Main Street square where about 75%+ business activity takes place each weekday morning; store fronts facing onto this busy intersection are indicative today only remnant wall traceable remaining sections still standing today mostly dating back over 100 years ago pre white slave days with few people living here today much like many other small southern towns back then
The National Guard Gift History can trace its origins back to the first national guard units organized in 1792. At that time, the United States was still a fledgling nation and lacked any formal military structure. To provide soldiers with supplies, clothing, and equipment on short notice, President George Washington ordered the creation of three brigades of militia officers under the command ofMajor General Nathanael Greene. The first brigade was created on July 4th, 1792 and consisted of eighty-six men. The second brigade followed on October 15th and consisted of one hundred men. The third brigade was created on December 12th and consisted of ninety-eight men. Initially these units were used for garrison duty in New York City and other Southern states during the early 1800s. However, by 1812 the militias had been reassigned to various duties throughout America includingraidenship missions against British forces in New England as well as providing support for ongoing war efforts in Europe. In 1815 Congress passed an act authorizing the purchase of additional militiamen for use as federal guards within ten years. On November 30th, 1816 President James K Polk signed a bill creating thirteen more brigades under Major General Winfield Scott’s command which would serve until 1865 when they were dissolved pursuant to Prewar Military Reconstruction plans which aimed to return America to civil order following its involvement in World War I (1914-18). Throughout their history the National Guard have provided quality service through their dedication to countrymen both at home and abroad while also displaying great bravery during wartime operations. Some of our most famous Guardsmen include: George Armstrong Custer (1863-1947), Ulysses S Grant (1824-1911), Forrest Gump (1937-1994), Babe Ruth (1893-1967), or John F Kennedy (1936-1963). Today there are over 20 thousand active duty members across fifty US states performing many unique roles such as homeland security, disaster relief, search & rescue assistance, ceremonial guard services, information technology support, public health protection measures etcetera.
National Guard gift history goes back to the Revolutionary War. The first national guard troops were mobilization in 1775, and by 1776 they had arrived in New York City. There, they served under General George Washington as part of the Continental Army. In 1779, the Continental Congress appointed a National Guard Regiment to protect New York City from attack by France. The regiment wasraised at West Point, New York on September 9th, 1779 and fighting began on October 12th against French forces at Saratoga Springs. On November 7th,1779, after a hard fought battle near White Sands Mountain, the regiment withdrew and crossed the Hudson River into Manhattan. They relieved British forces garrisoning that city until December 15th when they evacuated for Staten Island due to enemy fire from Fort Amsterdam. In 1802, Congress passed an act authorizing state militias to be raised for three years for “the defense of their own states” with no compensation given to those units once disbanded or discharged. This act also called for the organization of artillery and cavalry companies within each militia unit with chestnut bayonets as well as artillery pieces being distributed among all participating militias throughout the country (this would later become known as “The Artillery Act”). In 1803-1804 what is now known as The National Guardsmen were organized along State lines into regiments spread throughout this country with paygrades corresponding to rank within unit not just length of service (for example 2nd Lieutenant through colonel). By 1807 there were over 10500 soldiers in 1 million militiamen nationwide patchworkwise assigned according to State responsibility and assignment numbers which remain useful today identifying various formations engaged in various activities across our Nation during different periods
Grenada, Mississippi is a small town in Hinds County, Mississippi. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Grenada were French traders in 1699. They named it La Grenade because of the grenade-shaped rock that they found there. In 1795, Englishman James Cook named it Saint Vincent and the Grenadines after his patron saint. The British continued to name Saint Vincent until 1802 when they changed it to Grenada after their discovered a island in that name off the coast of Venezuela also known as St Vincent's Island. In 1804, Ulysses S Grant landed on Grenada and claimed it for the United States of America. The US government built Fort Sumter here in 1815 and developed this small settlement into a major military post during the antebellum period which helped defend against slave rebellions on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Grenada was incorporated as a city in 1907 and became an important commercial center within southern Mississippi during this time period due to its location at anchorages along multiple rivers mouths facilitating shipment of goods from points southward via boat or by railroads to steamer terminals upriver on Lake Pontchartrain and beyond. During World War II, Allied forces used Grenada as an airfield for bombing raids against Japan; however, no soldiers ever actually garrisoned the town since all personnel moved away before hostilities ended two years later without any combat action taking place there either side (and with much public Criticism).
