The Gulfport, Mississippi Army National Guard has a rich military history dating back to the early 1800s. The unit was founded in 1810 as the 2d Regiment of Mississippi soldiers and served in both the Mexican-American War and World War I. After the war, Gulfport became home to the 1st Regiment of Mississippi Infantry, which was activated in 1921 as part of the National Defense Act. The regiment fought in World War II and then served in Korea and Vietnam. Today, Gulfport’s Army National Guard is one of America’s oldest units and includes over 100 members who are mobilized for duty domestically and abroad. Gulfport’s army gift history begins with several local donations from citizens during the early 1800s. In 1810, Commodore John Rodgers donated land to be used as an armory on Telegraph Street in Gulfport. This donation would become known as Rodgers Armory Park today. A few years later, another local resident, James Fenton donated $5,000 to construct a building for use by the Mississippi Militia forces garrisoning Stroudsburg (now Clearwater) County. This gift would become known as Fort Walton Beach Museum today. In 1923, when Congress passed Title V ofthe New Deal legislation creating national defense agencies such as USDA (later renamed NEMA), Gulfport Mayor Charles Epps offered his city’s voluntary military department services within NEMA under Section 141g ofNARA Administrative Order No.(AO) 199-19(1). As part of this offer, City Hall also furnished administrative office space for NEMA at 511 North Main Street until its closure in 1978 due to budget cuts within NEMA itself. In 1951 following passage of Copy Cat Legislation that increased federal funding available for state defence agencies through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), Governor Ross Barnett appointed Captain Netherlands Hoyle Acting Director General Departmental Security Division at State Police Headquarters located at 601 Harrison Street in Jackson until December 15th when Mr Hoyle left government service with new assignment with Federal Highway Administration Headquarters located at 901 Market Square Suite 1400 Memphis Tennessee effective January 1st 1951 pursuant to 7 U S Code § 251 et seq.. On February 3rd 1952 Captain Hoyle was reassigned from this position effective March 16th when he assumed command responsibility for all security activities related thereto within State Police Headquarters including but not limited to deployment into any state or locality thereof on call by either Federal or State Authorities pursuant to AG Order No.(AO) 511-2/3/52 & Sections 502 thru 509 Of Public Law 97-364 which repealed sections 401 thru 409Of Public Law 95-516 & section 404ofPublic Law 92-577 In connection therewith... Gulfport was founded on December 4, 1907 by W.J. Allred and other businessmen from Meridianville, Alabama. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, it became a major cotton port for the southern states due to its location on the Mississippi River mouth and its ability to ship goods upriver to New Orleans and other points beyond.
