Gulfport is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County and home to Gulfport-Biloxi Airport. The city of Gulfport was incorporated on December 16, 1892. The first written record of what is now Gulfport arrived in 1797 when explorer James Cook named it "Korea". In 1819, John Rodgers founded the town on an island near present-day Biloxi. By 1830, the town had grown to include a sawmill and grist mill. The town's first store opened in 1832. In 1840, ranches were established in what is now Gulfport by British immigrants seeking land for their herds of cattle and horses. In 1865, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attempted unsuccessfully tocross the Mississippi River from Arkansas into Texas during the American Civil War through this area; he abandoned his attempt after being thwarted by Ulysses S. Grant's forces upstream at Prairie du Chien (now Waco). In 1886, cotton farmer Jumbo Flowers moved his family from Meridian to Gulfport with their oxen and mules because they could not get government aid to improve their crop prospects in Alabama due to growing Union support there against slavery under President Zachary Taylor's policy known as Embargo Act No. 9.(See also: Cotton gin history). The city of Gulfport grew rapidly around 1900 when railroad entrepreneurs bought property east of downtown for use as a terminal for the then new infrastructure connecting Mobile Bayou with Memphis and Jackson metropolitan areas across state lines.(See also: History of railroads in Mississippi) (For more information see: History Of Railroads In Mississippi) By 1910, citizens had built over 200 homes within two blocks of downtown core; by 1920 that number had increased to over 500 structures!
