Gulfport is a city in Mississippi, United States. The population was 25,675 at the 2010 census. Gulfport is the county seat of Marshall County. It lies on the Natchez Trace River and is the second-largest city in Mississippi after Jackson. The area that would become Gulfport was first settled by African Americans in 1821 as a fur trading post on Bayou Teche. By 1830, this community had developed into what is now Gulfport proper. The town's first mayor was Hernando De Soto, who arrived from Florida to explore the area in 1835 and named it for his friend and mentor, Captain John Cushing of British forces stationed at Baton Rouge (now Baton Rouge Parish). In 1840, when salt water began arriving from the Gulf of Mexico via Mobile Bay and other waterways, development of what became Gulfport accelerated due to its strategic location – just upstream from both Mobile Bay and the mouth of MissisipPIe River – as well as its natural resources such as cotton crops, seafood production, hunting grounds for white settlers and Native American nations such as Creek Indians. In 1856–57 Commodore Matthew Perry sailed through central MississippiP on his way to open up new trade with Asia during his famous "Mission Negro" Expedition; he called at various port cities along the way including New Orleans before reaching Gulfport on July 10th while passing within sight of Earth's moon. That fall saw significant growth in town due to shipping activity related to Perry's visit – brickyards were built; a steamboat landing was established; an wharf was built near Mills Point for loading ships coming into or leaving town; two churches were erected: First Baptist Church (later moved to Yazoo City) and Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (later moved to Starkville). During World War II much of what would be known about shipbuilding took place here thanks to GAF Corporation which constructed USS Quincy (LPG-1) at Biloxi Harbor between 1945-46 following orders from Admiral Ernest J . King USN commanding Fleet Marine Force Pacific theatre commander responsible for operations against Japan throughout World War II. Gulfport, Mississippi was founded in 1836 by the brothers John and James Gadsden. The town became a center for cotton production and commerce after the area was opened up to slavery. The town experienced significant growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its location on the Gulf of Mexico and its access to Interstate 10. Today, Gulfport is a major shipping and port city with a population of over 100,000 people. The history of Gulfport begins with John Gadsden, who arrived in Mississippi in 1836 as part of the first wave of white settlers that sought to expand westward into what is now Alabama. Gadsden had been born in 1798 in east Tennessee and moved westward at age 12 when his family separated from their longstanding slaveholding background. Gadsden worked his way up through local jobs before starting his own cotton plantation in 1825. He eventually developed an empire that produced more than 3 million pounds (1 million kilograms) of cotton per year. By 1850, Gadsden’s plantations had become one of the most important economic forces in southeastern Alabama. He helped lead the state into statehood in1868 and remained an important political leader until his death in 1865. James Gadsden followed his brother into business ownership after John’s death but fared less well than his brother at home due to competition from internal bleeding caused by too much work loading bales onto wagons during harvest season. James decided to move back East to Tennessee where he started another cotton plantation before returning permanently to Mississippi around 1830-31 as part of a group led by General Andrew Jackson which purchased land east of Mobile Bayou for future settlement purposes (Jacksonville would be established two years later). James managed some additional plantations until 1840 when he sold all but one for $2 million dollars($100 million today). This purchase set off a period of rapid growth for Jimtown which soon became oneof America’s most diversified commercial agricultural regions providing markets with goods from Europe, Asia, Africa, South America & North America including products such as flour, rice & coffee beans destined for ports along the Gulf Coast where they were unloaded on open-decked vessels called “barges” or “catboats” moored offshore while men workedloading them onto barges manned by oarsmen known as “dry dockers” Gulfport quickly emerged as one of America's leading port cities during this time with its booming economy fueled by both slave trade activity onshore (primarily via Point White Light), manufacturing activities centered around shipbuilding & textile manufacture ashore (manufacturing items such as corduroy pants) & inland transportation via roads connecting Memphis (& Jackson) with points downstream like Mobile Bayou
