The Hattiesburg Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by J.C. Hinton and his brother, Amos Hinton. The company built a large facility on the south side of town and began to produce coffee beans. There he relieved Captain David Denny who had been guarding Fort Hindman near modern day Hernando Island since December 22nd 1822 when it was captured by US Navy Commodore Perry during Perry's third expedition against Mexico City's Mexican Empire during that time period known as Black Hawk War (1814–1821).
