Hernando is a small, rural town in central Mississippi. For most of its history, it has been a seat of government for the county that surrounds it. The name Hernando comes from the Spanish word huerto, meaning "inn." In 1821, when the United States acquired Louisiana, Congress passed an act giving the new nation's West African possessions – including Mississippi – to Spain. Spain ceded Hernando to the United States in 1837 as part of a peace treaty following the Mexican-American War. The town was established by white settlers in 1839. By 1860, only a handful of people remained and production had tapered off. However, during Reconstruction (1865-77), Hernando became one of the most Progressive towns in Mississippi. It became home to large black families and businesses started up by blacks such as Booker T Washington and Waddell Coleman among others. The community also enjoyed high ratings for public morality and education due to its anti-corruption policies implemented during this time period. shortly after World War II ended with defeat for Allied forces at D-Day beachhead Normandy, many Japanese Americans were interned here during World War II because they were considered enemy aliens under US law. These Internment camps are now known as Florence National Cemetery located just east of town on US Route 601A near Veterans Memorial Parkway

Hernando is a town in Jones County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jones County. The name comes from Spanish Hernando de Soto, who explored and discovered this area in 1539. The first settlers in what is now Hernando were French colonists who arrived in 1692. They named their community after Hernando de Soto, the explorer and conqueror of Florida and Louisiana. In 1817, Englishmen settled here as part of an effort to expand US boundaries into Mexico. They named the town after General Andrew Jackson, who had recently been appointed Commander-in-Chief of all American forces west of the Missouri River. When Jackson was impeached in 1828, his replacement as President ordered that all military installations be disbanded in Mississippi except for Fort Sumter on Hilton Head Island (now known as Hilton Head National Seashore). This order caused great outrage throughout the state because it effectively ended American involvement in Mississippi politics for years to come. However, many people still refer to Hernando as "Jackson's Town." In 1843–44, residents of nearby Columbus revolted against Nathaniel Banks’s governmental policies by refusing to let him build a road through their village to connect Columbus with Natchez Trace Railroad Company yards located northwest of town bearing his name just outside central business district (CBD). As a result of this public action or "No Road Proclamation," which remains oneof Mississippi's most famous landmarks even though it no longer exists today,[1] Banks was forced to withdraw his plans for the road and abandoned them altogether during his extended stay in Harrisonburg County during that year's gubernatorial campaign.[2] In 1865 when Andrew Johnson became President he ordered Federal troops stationed at Mobile Bay to begin withdrawning federal troops from Alabama; however Mobilebay reverted back under Confederate control two years later when Johnston surrendered.[3][4] Eventually both towns returned under Union control following skirmishes during Reconstruction notable mostly around Vicksburg where Confederates unsuccessfully attempted an assault upon Union soldiers garrisoned there while Union forces successfully defended themselves;[5][6][7][8][9] Additionally cotton plantations established along Mobile Bay gradually transitioned from slave-produced crops into self-sufficient cotton production beginning about 1870 due to increased demand by markets elsewhere within America and Europe following World War I;[10][11][12] This period also saw large numbers arrive from African Americans seeking work on white households picking cotton – sometimes earning up to 20 cents per pound – until such workers were eventually integrated into society by 1920 despite continued resistance among some whites involved with plantation life/ economy
Hernando County, Mississippi was formed on March 15, 1821, from the northern section of Jackson County. The county seat was at Pascagoula. On November 3, 1841, Hernando County became a part of the Union as part of the Compromise of 1850. OnMarch 1, 1861, it seceded from the United States and joined Confederate States of America. In 1865 it rejoined the US when it gained its independence. The county is named for Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto.
