Indianola, Mississippi is a town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 10,544 at the 2010 census. Indianola is an agricultural town and its economy is based on agriculture. Major crops include cotton, corn, soybeans, rice, and sorghum. The first white people to live in Indianola were Creek Indians who came from the Creek Nation in Alabama in 1802. In 1818 the United States moved the Cherokee Nation from Georgia to what is now Jackson County after their Removal from Georgia. The first store opened in Indianola in 1825 and by 1830 there were five stores and three blacksmiths operating in the town. The first school was founded in 1827 and by 1840 there were six schools open for students across eight townships of Jackson County. Cotton plantations began to be developed around Indianola during the early 1800s as a result of increased demand for slave labor on cotton plantations throughout the South due to new technologies such as steamboats and railways. By 1860 most of the plantations had been abolished or converted into sugar cane plantations with fewer slaves working them than before because of cheaper natural resources available elsewhere. The decline of slavery throughout the region caused a decrease in demand for slave labor which led to a decline in jobs for black Americans relative to white Americans during Reconstruction Period (1865-1913). This period saw largescale White flight from southern states following voting rights granted unto African Americans through Reconstruction legislation known as "The Fourteenth Amendment".
