After the war,Jackson experienced a period of decline, culminating in a major economic crash in the late 1980s. However, recent revitalization has helped to reverse this trend The history of Jackson begins with Captain John Jacob Astor’s decision to establish himself as a trader on the Yazoo River some years before his purchase of 10% interest in what would become Fort Sumter in 1797. The first permanent white settler arrived here about 1800; however it did not take long for trade along the river to become very profitable due to good access to natural resources such as timber and slaves. With increased demand for goods from Great Britain and other parts of America following impressment during Britishcolonial times west of Mobile Bay – primarily through Indian traders – local merchants quickly began becoming very rich under British rule because they couldmonetize their exports without having to pay duties or taxes which undercut American industry both geographically and economically! During Spanish colonial times there were several settlements located near present day Jacksonville southward into what is now Morgan County but no real development took place until after US independence when General Andrew Johnson sent Colonel James Moore overland from Stroudsburg upriver past Chickasaw Nation towards Tupelo with orders “to open up this country [i.e., Mississippi] so that our people may get possession thereof”! At first there was resistance by Native Americans who saw any white exploration within their ancestral lands as an invasion; however eventually conditions changed favorably enough for violence between whites & natives slowly dissipated until finally American forces burned down most all Spanish structures east of Mobile Bay which effectively ended all Spanish power east of Mobile Bay – excepting San Francisco de los Baños on Pensacola Beach where Spain still held nominal jurisdiction over East Florida! Captain Astor selected a site just north bank (now downtown)ofthe Yazoo River opposite where today’s Walmart stands on Four Mile Street between Church Street & Meridian Avenue back then 4 miles wide plus 1 1/4 mile deep making it one football field wide at best!! This area would come later known simply as “The Field” !! With so many settlers coming here during these early days only 3 buildings remain standing today including: One house built by Capt John Jacob Astor next door he called White House which served him rent free for 5 years prior to his death in 1814; another building erected by Major Isaac Taylor around 1815 named Robinson Mansion now used as apartments; also 2 barns constructed probably around this time frame across from each other behind First Baptist Church now used as parking lot…. All 3 buildings are long gone – including White House!! In fact only 2 remaining structures left standing within limits established at that time….. Which included one general store built soon afterwards adjacent current day Fourth Street side street corner Just North Of Market Place ……and also old courthouse which stood right smack dab downtown next To State Capitol building currently being used partially AS A PARKING LOT FOR THE PARCEL OF NEW LOCAL BUSINESSES ADJACENT TO ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY!!!!! Nowadays you can actually see evidence original masonry inside old courthouse dating back to c1790!!! As you can plainly see even if we could find every single building once extant from those days nothing could bring back those beautiful 3 historic buildings!!!! What a shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
