Laurel, Mississippi was founded by the 17-year old John L. Laurel in 1853. The town was named after a tree that grew near his farmstead. In 1865, when the Union army occupied the state, many of its citizens deserted to join the Confederacy. Some of these refugees set up a small farmstead and continued to grow corn until 1863 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee took over their land and began selling it for cotton. By 1874, most of Laurel's residents had abandoned their homes and businesses in order to support the Confederacy. However, some families managed to keep their farms and continue growing corn until 1886 when Reconstruction ended in America. Afterward, poverty and illiteracy prevailed in Laurel until 1991 when a group of local students decided to preserve its history by restoring it as an open-air museum .

The Laurens family operated a gristmill and millinery business until their death in 1853.
