L Laurel is a small town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The community was named for Laurel Hill in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The post office was established in 1855 and closed in 1957. L Laurel is located at (31.967754, -89.639595). According to the USGS National Map, it occupies land that once formed parts of Claiborne County and Chickasaw County on the eastern border of Hancock County. According to the USGS National Land Database, Laurel was platted in 1855 by Jno A Clarke with a grant of 4 acres to trustees Wm H Wilkinson and James Pritchard Jr.. On March 15, 1861, John Sibley surveyed 3256 acres lying east of present-day Laurel township on what is now known as State Road #92a. This included all or most of what would later be called Laurel Township including present day Laurel Hill/Stoneybrook subdivision which also borders on Laurel today but never quite reached its current location due to survey errors made during the original platting process; Present day Stoneybrook actually lies within both Claiborne and Chickasaw Counties before reaching rural Marion county line some time after late 1800s when these counties were combined into one unit under new government organization called Johnston COUNTY! An additional grant for 100 acres given by Governor Ladd was received from Daniel Boone on November 14th 1794 just south of Clarksville on Big Creek River which lays east-northeast of modern day Mount Olivet Cemetery off Ulysses Highway between Meridian and Vicksburg where he had been living since 1785! Laurel, Mississippi was founded in 1846 by the merger of two earlier settlements. The first, Holmesville, was located on the Yazoo River and included a population of about 50 people. The second, Meridian, was located on the Mississippi River and had a population of about 350 people. The towns were named for General James H. Laurel who fought in the American Civil War and later served as Secretary of War under President Ulysses S. Grant. In 1852, the legislature created a town hall to be used by both Holmesville and Meridian residents. In 1854, a steamboat called "Laurel" arrived at Meridian from Mobile with goods for the local black marketeers. This event is considered to be one of the earliest examples of black business venture in Mississippi Territory. Meridian's growth continued until 1861 when Confederate forces invaded Union territory and during that year most all white businesses in Meridian were destroyed or taken over by Confederate sympathizers. About 200 black Mississippians also joined Confederate forces and some managed to escape bondage but many more went into hiding or slavery after they learned their families would be caught up in warring factions if they remained loyal to the Union side.
