In Laurel, Mississippi, the first coffee shop opened in 1907. The business was called Dutch Coffee and served a bag of Dutch-grown beans to customers. In 1916, a man named Harry Fenton started buying and selling beans from his home. He changed the name of the business to Dutch Coffee & Tea Company, and began making espresso drinks. In 1963, he sold the company to a group of investors who renamed it Dutch Coffee Corporation. The company continued to make espresso drinks until 1974 when it merged with another coffee company to form Starbucks.
Laurel, Mississippi is a small town in the Yazoo Delta region of Mississippi. It was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1824 as a military post on the Yazoo River. The town grew rapidly after it was designated as the provisional capital of Mississippi in 1829. In 1840, Laurel became an incorporated village and remained so until its annexation by Jackson, Mississippi in 1898. The town is named for General James Wilkinson, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as Governor of Alabama and Lieutenant Governor of Tennessee. Wilkinson's first home was built on what is now Main Street in Laurel and it still stands today. The town originally consisted of only five buildings: a courthouse, jail, old mill, schoolhouse and graveyard. Although not completely destroyed during Hurricane Katrina (2005), most of Laurel's older buildings were severely damaged or destroyed. Many people lost their homes, businesses and other assets which have taken years to rebuild. Despite this difficult experience, many people continue to live and work in Laurel despite the challenges posed by recent events such as Katrina and economic recession. Today, Laurel is a thriving community with excellent schools that provide opportunity for all students regardless of background or economic circumstance. The economy has been slowly recovering since 2006; however there are still some challenges that need to be addressed including job loss due to outsourcing efforts by local companies during the Great Recession and lack of affordable housing options available for those living in poverty.

Laurel is a city in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County. The first permanent settler in what is now Laurel was James Fenton who arrived in 1799 and homesteaded on land that would become part of present-day Hancock County. In 1805, John Hargrave moved from London to settle in what is now Laurel and built the first cabin there. In 1811, David Pratt and his family located a log cabin about one mile east of present-day Laurel on State Road 21. The Pratt family operated a store called "The Furnace" until it burned down in 1841. In 1840, Captain Bledsoe bought 640 acres (2 km²) north of town from Nathaniel Barker for $10 per acre ($ today). This property became known as "Barker's Landing." Barker had been an early settler in Hancock County and had helped build the first courthouse in Jacksonburg (now Meridian). He also donated land for a school near his landing. Captain Bledsoe named this new community "Laurel" after his wife's maternal grandmother Latin name, Lauretta Bonner; but some sources give credit to General Andrew Johnson for naming the community after Lauretta Bonner. In 1847 Congressman Thaddeus Stevens visited Laurel while he was campaigning for office in Jacksonburg; he reported that he found it delightful and recommended its establishment as a post office with excellent prospects of success if undertaken with care by Congressmen having charge over postal affairs within their districts. On July 6th of that year – less than two years after its founding – Laurel Post Office opened using mail sent from Jacksonburg via William Jealous’s stagecoach service between those towns which connected via Harrisonville Ferry across White River on July 5th 1830 – thus becoming one of only two post offices remaining open throughout the whole antebellum period without any direct rail connection! It should be noted here that since prior to 1830 Jacksonburg lay within Harrisonville Ferry District - separate from modern day Meridian - so even though both towns were originally named for their respective women's ancestresses/grandmothers' maiden names rather than specific places/locations they are still considered To Be One Place! Unfortunately due to lack of rail connectivity during Reconstruction this ceased to be true soon afterwards following Union occupation & control over all southern US interstate highways
