Madison, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County and has been since 1867. Madison was named for James K. Madison, who served as governor of Mississippi from 1827 to 1830 and as US senator from Ohio from 1841 to 1851. Madison was founded by General Andrew Johnson in 1817 on land that he acquired near present-day Meridianville after leading a victorious military campaign against Native American warriors known as the Chickasaw Wars. Johnson intended it to be his winter capital while he campaigned in nearby Mobile; but soon after its founding, Madison becameJohnson's chief political base and home until his death in 1865. The town's growth during the mid-19th century paralleled that of cotton production in southeastern Mississippi; but it stagnated during Reconstruction following the Civil War. In 1920s development efforts revivedMadison with help from local boosters including George Prentice Riley and Johnnie Cochran; but progress stalled again during the Great Migration of black Mississippians to northern cities during the 1930s and 1940s. By 1970, most people living in Madison had departed for other parts of Mississippi or Tennessee. During World War II, Wisconsin native Wesley Snipes (a product of racially segregated housing projects) starred as a rural sheriff in "What Price Freedom?" filmed at Meridianville then located adjacent to now-demolished Meridian High School before moving permanently to Madison when filming began there on December 12th 1945 On July 10th 2019 another movie set called "Dunkirk" will be set within 100 yards of Meridianville which made many residents evacuate their homes
