Mccomb is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County. Mccomb was founded in 1835 by Captain John A. McComb and his wife Eliza Ballard. It was named for General James G. McCullough, who had commanded US forces during the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1813 and who later served as Ulysses S. Grant's Secretary of War. The first post office in McComb was established in 1836, and it functioned until 1903. In that year, it became a consolidated town with nearby Beauregard and Madisonville under one administration control; this arrangement continued until 1907 when each town had its own postmaster general. According to the 2010 census, the racial makeup of McComb is 84% white (non-Hispanic), 11% black or African American, 0% Native American/Alaska Native, 2% Asian/Pacific Islander, 2% from other races, and 1% two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9%.

They moved to Cartersville, Alabama where they raised their three children. After Mrs. McCombs death in 1904, JamesMcComb passed away at age 102 years old and Mccombs name has been associated with the town ever since.

The McCombs named their farm after their father, James Mckenzie McComb, an early settler in that area. In 1857, General Robert Estrada's cavalry unit halted traffic on the Tallapoosa River near what is now downtown Mccomb while moving supplies to Little Rock for Confederate forces during the American Civil War. As a result of this event, many local farmers developed crops and raised livestock around downtown Mccomb until World War II when it became an agricultural community again due to chemical warfare research being conducted there during that time period
