Meridian, Mississippi is a town in Jefferson County, Mississippi. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Meridian is the easternmost town in Mississippi and is bordered by Marshall County to the north and east; it shares a border with Alabama to the south. The first settlers in Meridian were white men who arrived during Reconstruction after the Civil War. The town was platted on November 1, 1871, when commissioners from Jackson recommended that Meridian be established as an ordinance city. The first mayor of Meridian was J.D. Pettigrew. In 1892, James Fenton donated land to form what is now downtown Meridian. Fenton's donation included a hotel and four blocks of business property which are now known as First Baptist Church Square/Fenton Park South/University Avenue/Canyon Drive. In 1912, Meridian became one of three towns in Jackson County (the others being Hattiesburg and Greenwood) that voted to secede from Mississippi due to dissatisfaction with then-Governor John C Hood's policies towards African Americans living in Jackson County without proper paperwork or access to education or other basic rights guaranteed under state law. In 1915–1916, two major floods hit Meridian: One caused by heavy rains over Christmas weekend Keystone Lake burst its banks and began spilling into streets downstream; this event totaly destroyed many homes and businesses upstream along University Avenue between Canyon Drive and First Baptist Church Square/Fenton Park South; damage also occurred on nearby Cedar Shoals Boulevard upstream from University Avenue between Cedar Shoals Boulevard East and Second Street Bridge (now Redwine Road). 2nd flood season: 1922 After heavy rains over Presidents Day weekendstorm system dumped gallons of water onto parts of town rivers overflowed their banks again damaging homes both upstream along US 69 bridges spanning Cedar Shores Boulevard & Second Street Bridge tributaries & 100 miles long main branch only minor flooding occured
