Meridian was founded on July 3, 1853 by white men from neighboring Lauderdale County as a trading post on the Red River between that county and Jackson County. The post lasted until 1857 when it was moved to its present site near what is now Meridian Street and Washington Avenue. In 1881, Meridian became an incorporated town; in 1907, it became a city under the name of "Meridian". The first permanent settler in Meridian was John Wetherbee who arrived in 1797 and platted the town of Meridian on land he purchased from Neshoba Parish for $5 per acre (0.50 km²). Wetherbee's heirs sold most of their holdings in Meridian to entrepreneur George Maney within two years of his arrival but kept some holdings including what is now Main Street which they renamed Michigan Avenue after their new home state capital Lansing,Michigan ().After Maney's death in 1827 his widow married Alexander Conner who had come overland from Tennessee with his family seeking asylum following the American Revolution ().Conner started a ferry service across Red River which transported goods and passengers upriver to Stroudsburg (), then downriver to New Orleans (). In 1830, through marriage to Miss Sally McCulloch (daughter of Colonel John McCulloch), Alexander Conner acquired 1/3 interest in the Wilkinson-Keenan Ferry Company which carried passengers and cargo between Memphis () and Corinth () on Cana Passage(). After Miss Sally McCulloch died suddenly unmarried at age 36 during childbirth in1834 her husband took her estate back eastward into Alabama where he built a log cabin known as "The White House" later becomingMobile City Hall before selling it to Andrew Johnson for $10 000 (). With this acquisition Mr Conner became one of Mobile's earliest millionaires.) A political factions developed around these early settlers: those favoring development along Indian Creek () against those favoring more open country settlement; also existing were economic jealousies among landowning families exacerbated by competition for water access (), transportation routes (), timber resources (), grazing areas (), trade opportunities ()) arising out of religious differences:, racial discrimination (), cotton production (); slaveholding (); English speaking immigrants (); Scots-Irish Presbyterians .) A courthouse was built near present day Main Street in 1855 but never used because no case could be brought there due to lack of space (). One early resident described Meridian as "a small village without any important buildings." In 1861 Confederate General Robert E Lee occupied Jasper while Union forces advanced northwest through central Mississippi towards Vicksburg., leading eventually to Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865.: When news reached Mobile that Confederates had surrendered everyone inside except cavalry commander Nathan Bedford Forrest rode out into town accompanied only by three horsemen insteadof takingFolder pictures like many other Southern Gentlemen did...He saddled up behind one Negro boy who walking led him about four blocks away from where we stood so I could snap this picture before he went into hiding!
