The history of the Natchez Airforce Gift Shop began in 1941 when General James E. Sawyer, then a Major in the USAAF, decided to set up shop in Natchez to sell military surplus items. The shop quickly became popular and was soon selling everything from radios to missiles. In 1946, Sawyer sold his business to the Natchez Chamber of Commerce and it continued growing until 1954 when the USAF closed its Natchez base. The gift shop reopened under new management and continued operations until 1978 when it closed again due to budget cuts. However, the store's legacy lives on as an important part of NatcheZ's cultural heritage. Today, the shop sells a variety of air force gifts including medals and insignia, books on air force history, and models of planes and helicopters.

The Air Force gift history can be traced back to World War II when the military began giving gifts to civilians. The first air force gift was a watch in 1941. The Military Assistance Command (MAC) started giving gifting in 1945 and it continued until the end of the war in 1951. In 1953, the USAF created the Office of Special Programs (OSP) which gave out grants and loans to civilian organizations. From 1957-1966, OSP gave out over $1 million in gifts. After that, Gifts were placed within Headquarters Air Force Command (HQAFC) which was responsible for allocating gifts within Headquarters USAF as well as subordinate commands and units across Air Force Space and Missile Systems Commands (Airspace Command, Missile Command, Space Command), Provinces and Areas commanders/units, Service Forces commands/units and Defense agencies etc. In 1992, HQAFC merged with United States European Command (USEUCOM) creating a unified command for all forces stationed outside of the United States including NATO members. As part of this merger, HQEUROPEK also absorbed HQ AFGiftHistory into its organization making it one single repository for all airforce Gift History from both during peacetime and wartime eras
Natchez, Mississippi was founded in 1794 by the French as a fur trading post on the lowerMississippi River. The area now known as Natchez was part of Choctaw Nation and was ceded to the United States in 1803. In 1840, Natchez became the capital of Mississippi Territory. In 1846, it became the capital of Mississippi when President James K. Polk moved from Mobile to Jackson. Natchez experienced significant growth during Reconstruction (1865-1877). Today, it is a small city with a population of about 50,000 people located on the non-tidal Ole Miss River below Jackson State University and its affiliated research hospitals. The history of Natchez began with Francine du Plessis de la Fayette who settled there in 1794 after fleeing France during the French Revolution. She named her settlement "Natchez" for her native village in Normandy where she had been born some years earlier. The first permanent settler in what is now Natchez was Francois Xavier Chouteau who arrived in 1799 and organized a post office and store at what is now downtown NatcheZ that same year. He also built a millstream which still provides water supply today to many homes in town. In 1802, Sam Houston transferred his seat from Huntsville to make room for Fort Gaines on the Alabama side of the river near present day Jacksonville Landing - making him one of only two U S Presidents ever to have done so (the other being James K Polk). In 1803, General Andrew Jackson appointed Pierre Charles L’Enfant as engineer for organizing Louisiana into territory under U S control following their Mexican War victory over Mexico City's defenders led by Don Carlos Mesa de Ayala y Costilla y Morales – making L’Enfant one of America's leading experts on surveying and urban planning at that time! While working on surveys for possible new settlements around present day New Orleans along both banks of Lake Pontchartrain (then called La Louisiane), L’Enfant came across what would later be called "Natchez." Named after his patron saint Notre Dame de la Garde - an early Huguenot community located just east of Baton Rouge - this location had been abandoned by its original settlers because malaria caused them great difficultygrowing maize crops there due to lack of available irrigation systems then available! However, L’Enfant immediately saw potential for development here due to its natural features: longitude 5 degrees west from Greenwich Mean Time; easy access to alluvial soil resources; rich fishing opportunities off nearby Mississippian rivers; & large amounts cf timber & coal available nearby! He recommended erecting a wharf/riverfront promenadefrontal gazebo& log cabin courthouseheightson Point Nationale overlooking lake Pontchartrainto serve as an important commercial centerand cultural hubfor all those interestedin learning about local Native American cultures (& their traditional foods!)AsL'Enfant himself put it:"This spot must be kept constantly alive by masonic influences lest our country become too corrupt!" An early versionof what eventuallybecame known as Natchez Downtown could be seen emerging from behind contemporary buildings adjacentto Point Nationale today while lookingwest downriver towardsJacksonport visible just beyond modern day windows overlooking Ole Miss River
