The history of Ocean Springs, Mississippi is one that has been full of turmoil and upheaval. The town was founded in 1819 by General Andrew Jackson as a stop on his way to the Louisiana Purchase. It quickly became a center for slave trade and, eventually, for cotton production. In the 1830s, the town began to experience economic prosperity thanks to its close relationship with Mobile Bayou. However, by 1840, cotton production had declined and Ocean Springs began to decline as well. By 1870, only a small number of people remained in the town; its economy had all but disappeared. However, things changed in 1978 when Ocean Springs was chosen as the site for the new National Marine Fisheries Service headquarters. This marked an important reversal for the town; until then it had been struggling to maintain any kind of infrastructure or support systems. The change has led to renewed development in Ocean Springs and has helped it become one of Mississippi's most vibrant communities once again.
On November 1, 1882, the first post office in Ocean Springs was established. The townspeople named their post office for the then-recently created port on the Mississippi River. In 1912, Ocean Springs had its first fire department and in 1916 it began to offer public education.
