This event helped spark a series of nonviolent protests throughout southern Mississippi against racial discrimination that eventually culminated with passage of laws limiting voting rights for African Americans starting in 1965 under Governor George Wallace's administration before he lost control over state government and signed an executive order restricting voting rights to citizens aged eighteen or older statewide effective November 1st; this order also required all public buildings including schools to be kept open exclusively through Monday nights while officers patrolled them without permits. Olive Branch, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Hafen Micropolitan Statistical Area. Olive Branch was founded on December 21, 1819 by Methodist Episcopal missionaries from South Carolina under the name of "New Hope". The first settlers were Methodists and Baptists who came to live in what is now Olive Branch in 1819 as part of a group led by Rev. Samuel Willingham. The town was platted on December 21, 1819 and named for General James K. Polk's wife (and mother-in-law), Olivia Bowers Wilkinson Polk. The original schoolhouse was built in 1825 and served until it burned down in 1865. A new schoolhouse was constructed and served until it also burned down in 1865. The current community of Olive Branch originated when local farmers decided to move their cotton plantations away from Jackson County to make way for a new county courthouse that would be built near Clintonville on the former site of an old sawmill north of present day Olive Branch. In 1830, John Wesley Hardin donated land east of present day Olive Branch on which he erected a frame house called Travelers Rest which he used as his headquarters during his missionary work among the Creek Nation Indians near Oxfordville before moving permanently to Holly Springs inlarght with his family in 1840 In 1840 Revd Hardin organized what became known as the Methodist Episcopal District of Hinds County This district included all or portions including present day Hinds Counties; Gulfport; Mobile; Baldwin; Newton; Pascagoula ; Hernando Beach; Quincy ; Escambia Bayou . As early as 1841 Reverend Hardin had started construction on what would become known as Fairview Chapel which stood today on land extending between Old Fort McGee Road and US 79 just south of current day Highway 90 East about two miles west of where future State RepresentativeTryon Coleman resided during much later years When finished approximately $6000 had been spent but no one attended church services because there were not enough people within Easy Street District to constitute a congregation What followed were years filled with struggles withilled both by those who labored diligently to build but also by natural disasters such as floods caused by Hurricane Andrew when Fairview Chapel completely collapsed resulting ultimately in its demolition forever after being rebuilt several times over various locations finally standing today directly across from Interstate 75 Exit 161
