Olive Branch is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. The name comes from a fork in the Yazoo River where two branches meet, Olive and Branch. The first settlers to what is now Olive Branch were humble farmers who began farming there in 1814. They named their new settlement for General Andrew Jackson because he had beenicer general during the American Revolution. By 1830, some 50 families had settled here and built homes around a small Methodist church on Main Street. In 1833, General John Cramer decided to move his army northward into Mississippi to quell the slave rebellion that was underway there. He ordered his troops to cross the river at Olive Branch and march into central Hinds County to take advantage of its easy access to transportation and markets south of Mobile Bayou (now known as Gulfport). As they neared town, they heard reports that slaves were being sent downriver by boatloads from nearby plantations towards Meridianville so they could be sold back into slavery. Cramer's soldiers encountered resistance from local whites who barricaded themselves inside their homes until reinforcements arrived from Mobile Bayou just before they crossed over into central Hinds County. After battling through numerous skirmishes and capturing several slaveholders along the way, Cramer's troops reached Olive Branch without any loss on 5 November 1833 (the day before Christmas). The city of Olive Branch was founded about this time by several families who had relocated from other parts of Mississippi after learning about General Cramer's accomplishment. They called their new community "Olive Branch" because of its location near the forks of the Yazoo River close to where cotton fields still thrived today.
