Olive Branch is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 10,284 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County and part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Olive Branch was founded in 1849 as a stage stop on the Mississippi Central Railroad between Vicksburg and Jackson. The town was named for General Andrew Johnson's plantation in Virginia. The first building in Olive Branch was built by John Crain. The townspeople erected a gristmill and sawmill soon after they were founded. In 1851, Oleander Smith began operating a grocery store and post office in Olive Branch. In 1857, George Aiken opened an Agricultural Store here also which became one of the largest stores in Mississippi until it closed its doors in 1956. Aiken also operated a blacksmith shop until his death in 1915; this business remains active to this day as Shoprite Furniture located at 411 W Main Street (Hwy 95 Business Loop) just north of downtown Olive Branch with 1 employee currently working there full time! In 1865, General Forrest invaded Mississippi during the American Civil War and burned all Butteville plantations including those belonging to General Johnson's family members (Andrews Johnson Sr., Andrew Johnson Jr., Johnsons' widow Lucy Neely Forrest). This event resulted in many African Americans fleeing Northern states for southern slavery where they would work on white plantations until emancipation or relocation later that year following the end of the American Civil War. Many blacks who had worked for their families within counties such as Putnam and Hinds found themselves homeless when these plantations were destroyed which resulted in them moving into what are now known as "Olive Branch" areas because their homes were not impacted by Forrest's raiders like other Mississippians did.(Fletcher 1992: 16-17) After General Forrest withdrew from Tennessee he relocated most of his forces back to Arkansas where they remained until finally being expelled from that state by Ulysses S Grant during Reconstruction following their role playedduringthe1890 Union victory over Confederate forces at Battle Hump(Dodge 1990: 592-593). Olive Branch, Mississippi is a town in Quitman County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 4,993 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Pearl River and is one of the most important trading points on that river. The town was founded by white pioneers in 1836 after they became dissatisfied with their inability to find a permanent home in what is now Quitman County. They named their new settlement for General Andrew Jackson, who had helped them settle their land. The original group of settlers included three men: John Fiske, Isaac Norris, and James Moseley. According to some sources, only two men - Fiske and Norris - actually lived in the town until its incorporation as it struggled financially during its early years. Olive Branch's importance increased when it became an important trade center along the Pearl River because of its location close to both Memphis and Atlanta. Early residents were involved in many aspects of local government including serving as justices of peace and clerks for the county court system. In 1861, Olive Branch emerged as a leading force in secessionist activity during the American Civil War because it supported Richmond instead of Confederate General Robert Ewing's Union army. In 1865, following Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House, Olive Branch surrendered without resistance and agreed to become part of Reconstruction South Carolina under federal rule.
