The town was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1836 and named for Olive Branch Creek which flows through the town. In 1868, the town became a county seat and was renamed Olive Branch after General James A. Olive who fought in the Mexican–American War as a captain of Volunteers from Alabama. In 1899, it merged with nearby Tupelo to form the Jackson-Olive Branch Metropolitan Statistical Area which has a total population of over 150,000 people within its boundaries. The primary industry in downtown Olive Branch is retail trade but there are also several small businesses located throughout the city including printing presses and textile mills that have closed since 2000 due to economic conditions around the world. The city was named for General Andrew Jackson's daughter, who had married a local man. The population of the city was 514 as of the 2010 census. The first white settlers in what is now Olive Branch were mechanics working on General Andrew Jackson's railroad project. They arrived in 1853 and started accumulating land around what is now downtown. On April 6, 1854 they formally organized as a town and named it after General Jackson's daughter, Olivea Branch. In 1865 it became a full-time U.S. municipality when it joined the Union as part of the Second Civil Warbraly In1868the legislature created a new county seat for Hancock County at Olive Branch and ordered all incorporated settlements within its borders to become counties too However, only one small community - Cedar Springs - adopted this policy After Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29th 2005, much damage occurred throughout Hancock County including parts of Olive Branch where structures had been destroyed or damaged beyond repair
