The first coffee shop in Petal, Mississippi was built in 1892. The business was called the Coffee House and it served coffee and pastries until 1976. In that year, the business was bought by Donny Hansen and renamed the Donny Hansen Coffee Shop. The shop continued to serve coffee until 1977.
Petal is a small town in the Mississippi Delta. It is located in Pike County, about 25 miles north of Jackson. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. Petal was founded in 1881 by two sisters, Lizzie and Sarah Petal. The original name of the town was "Pine Gap." The first doctor to visit Petal was Dr. John Ransom of Jackson. He set up a dispensary here and named it for his hometown, Pine Gap, Scotland. The community grew quickly because of its location and good soil that yielded crops such as cotton, sugar cane, wheat and potatoes. In 1910, Petal had a post office and telephone service. By 1920 there were four churches: one Methodist (founded in 1892), one Baptist (1899), one Presbyterian (owned by Presbyterians) and one Roman Catholic (founded in 1903). In 1939 the population reached 2,000 people when an expressway bypassed the town center; however it fell to 1,500 people by 1960 due to subdivisions and other rural-urban migration throughout the state during that decade. The decline of petaling began with World War II when many men went off to fight or serve in war; however many women also left their homes to work outside the home raising children alone or with family members who lived away from home while they were gone; this increased competition for jobs led to reduced crop yields leading to economic decline over time which has caused some locals to leave their towns altogether while others have added additional acreage into their farming operations so as not too face similar poverty as did their predecessors
