Picayune is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1851 by John Linton and others as a post office on the Yazoo River. It became a cattle station and cotton gin before becoming an incorporated community in 1903. Picayune's name comes from French for "a small stream." The first permanent settler in Picayune was John Linton, who arrived in 1851. He built a cabin near the present day Post Office Square and named it Lafayette after General Lafayette of France. The first store opened in 1861 under the ownership of Wm Humes and his sons Amos and Asa Humes. Cotton gin operations started around 1865 by Gideon Pope and Daniel Freeman with help from Jno Epps, later owner of the nearby Pigeon Forge plantation. A schoolhouse was built soon afterward on land donated by James Denton. In 1903, Picayune incorporated as a village under the name of Manchesterville with 1,500 residents. In 1951, when Picayune merged into Hancock County, its village status was discontinued and all citizens were re-classified as residents of their respective townships within Hancock County only (based on Census data). Since then, Picayune has seen major growth as an agricultural center with many businesses catering to local farmers including feed stores, grocery stores and meat processing plants (eagle Feedstex Inc., National Meat Packers). Additionally, several new businesses have been established in recent years that cater specifically to the needs of picayunesians such as one that provides wheelchair accessible access to its restaurant venue for special occasions or another which provides natural gas heating for homes during winter months Picayune is also home to several churches including First Baptist Church which dates back to 1871; Second Baptist Church which opened up shop here in 1907; Methodist Episcopal Church - South Campus building dating back to 1881; two active Zika virus research locations - Department of Environmental Health lab located between First Baptist church & School House Road & Center for Infectious Diseases located just off US 61A about 15 minutes north east from downtown; Haley Ford dealership - 6&7 miles south west from downtown on I-10E) The community offers cultural attractions like arts shows at Manchesterville Opera House every month during their season (usually late April through October); picnics each Saturday at Green Gables picnicground adjacent to township hall starting around 2pm each year during SUMMERTIME weather permitting; blacksmithing demonstrations taking place Saturdays @ 10am & 12pm at Oldsmobile plant next door where they make traditional Iron Crosses using old tools found aroundPicAYUNE PicAYUNE also offers recreation opportunities like golfing available most days during weekdays outside while there are also numerous parks & playgrounds throughout town limits
