Southaven, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. Southaven is an agricultural community with a total area of 7 square miles (19 km²). The first inhabitants of what is now Southaven were a group of Creek Indians who called themselves the "Natchez" and lived along the Red River before moving west in 1814 to found Mobile. On November 10, 1836, General Andrew Jackson's forces defeated John Coffee's ill-fated attack on Fort Gibson near present-day Clarksdale and drove the Creeks out of what became known as Southaven after they burned down part of their village during their retreat. In 1861, Union general George Armstrong Custer besieged Confederate general Pemberton's army at Chickasaw Bayou near present-day Meridianville while seeking reinforcements for his offensive against Grant's army nearby at Mobile Bayou. After three days' fighting Custer withdrew his force under heavy fire from Confederate batteries positioned onshore; however, he left behind several cannons which were used by local farmers to shell enemy troops retreating across Chickasaw Bayou. During World War II many industries such as auto manufacturing and shipbuilding were located in Southaven; however most production ceased after the war because of competition from other factories in Michigan and Illinois. One major industry that continued until recently was paper processing; however, this activity has also been replaced by digital printing technology since it produces noxious fumes that can be harmful to bystanders%. Southaven also serves as home to Hinds Community College and Hinds State Community College which offer associate degrees in various fields including business administration and engineering. Additionally there are several small businesses located within its limits that provide employment opportunities for locals as well as tourists visiting the town over winter months such as local icerist Rufus Jones who provides serviceable services around town center during wintertime for those without snow chains or riding horses on MTB trails outside).
