He and his wife, Peggy, were the first white people to live in what is now Southaven, Mississippi. The armsteads were among the earliest settlers in what is now Jackson County. They started a small farm and bought a rifle from an African American man named John White in 1787.
Southaven, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Southaven were the Choctaw Indian tribe. They were followed by white settlers and entrepreneurs who built plantations in the area around 1819-1820. By 1830, about 95% of all southbound traffic on Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard (now I-55) passed through this small community; today only a few residents remaining still reside there. In 1865 Jno Pugh leased land from Denmark Vesey to form present day Jackson Township and named it for General James G. Pugh – one of Union's most important generals during the Civil War and later Governor of Mississippi (1868–71). The original settlement near what is now First Street was known as "Pughville" after General Pugh's estate thereabouts which had been confiscated by Confederate forces during their invasion of northern Mississippi in 1862. The town was founded in 1821 by planters from Tennessee as a small community on the banks of the Alcorn River adjacent to present-day Meridianville. It grew rapidly due to its location near cotton plantations and its access to transportation routes, including roadways that led to Memphis and other major cities. By 1885, Southaven had become an important commercial center with numerous businesses such as a bank, store, meat market, dry goods store and hotel. In 1916, Southaven became home to one of the first racially integrated schools in Mississippi when white students moved into areas previously occupied by black slaves. In 1960 it became one of five towns in Jackson that joined together to form what would eventually be known as the Jackson metropolitan area. Southaven has experienced many changes over its history; some associated with growth (such as annexation by Meridianville), while others more related to events or people (such as Prohibition).
