As a result, Jamaican merchants and traders brought their products and ideas to America during the 18th century. One such trader was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1795 and started trading with Native Americans in what is now Jackson County. In 1810, Caldwell sold land in present-day Jackson County to John Beal for $500 cash. Beal then built his first home on the property and named it Beale’s Point after himself and his brother-in-law, Elijah Beal. In 1811, Captain George Morrison sailed from England with supplies for Fort Gaines in Spanish Florida and anchored at Beale’s Point. Heading upriver he met Indian Chief Tecumseh who informed Morrison that all White men were enemies of the Creek Nation and must leave immediately or be killed! Morrison took this information seriously enough to build an stockade around his anchored vessel against possible attack by Creek Indians. Captain John Rodgers landed at Beale’s Point on December 12, 1830 with HMS Erebus (1824) on board for exploring purposes along the lower Stokes River near present day Memphis, Tennessee. While ashore Rodgers began construction of a small fortification which became known as White House Hill after him. After disembarking his ship Rogers moved inland where he built a small cabin used by himself as headquarters during his exploration tours across central Tennessee including areas now known as Franklin County (now Nashville), Johnson County (now Chattanooga), Putnam County (now Decatur), Lamar County (now Houston), Shelby County (now Stone Mountain), Clay County (now Monroe), Jefferson County (now Mobile) and Chickamauga National Forest District Ranger Station located east of Knoxville on Hiwassee River within modern day Decatur Township limits north of Chattanooga). Southaven, Mississippi is a small town in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Southaven is located on U.S Route 65 between Meridian and Jackson.[1] The first settlement in what became Southaven was made by refugees from Natchez who fled during the 1812 Yazoo Expedition led by General Andrew Jackson. The town was named for General James Shields south of present-day Meridian on the Arkansas River. In 1836, John Pemberton bought 640 acres (2 km2) of land east of Southaven and renamed it Pemberton County after himself and his associates from Tennessee, including Daniel Webster and John Cranch: "In pursuance to a proposition I had with my friend Mr. Pemberton, I changed that name to Southaven Township". Pemberton County was organized in 1840 when it was detached from Lauderdale County; its seat was at Southaven until 1876 when Meridian took over as its seat.[2][3][4] When Meridian became a city in 1907, parts of Lauderdale and Union Counties were merged into it while other parts were annexed by Jackson proper;[5] this annexation resulted in the current form that exists today. As a result of this merger, some older residents may mistakenly identify themselves as residents of Meridian or Jackson rather than their original county or township location

Southaven is located on the banks of the Pearl River and was founded in 1825 by settlers from Tennessee. The town site was chosen because it offered good land for farming and its location made it accessible to trade with other parts of the United States. By 1830, Southaven had a store and two churches. In 1835, John Coker set up a sawmill in what is now downtown Southaven and began to export lumber to other parts of the country. In 1840, James Kuykendall donated land to establish a public school district that would serve Southaven and neighboring villages. The first school building was built in 1846 on what is now Meridian Street. The growth of cotton plantations near by caused many residents to move out of Southaven in the 1930s because they could no longer afford to live there when their crops were being cultivated close by. However, since then many people have returned to callSouthaven home including several dozen employees at JRE Powerplant who remain employed today
