Starkville, Mississippi was founded in 1821 byAlexander Stark and his family. The town was named for General James Stark, the brother of Alexander. The first store in town was built on Main Street and operated by Mr. Greeley. In 1829, the town had five businesses including a hotel, two churches, a blacksmith shop, four stores and a post office. By 1860, the population of the community had increased to over 1,000 people and it boasted an excellent school system with twenty-eight students in grades one through twelve. The cotton industry played an important role in Starkville's development early on. The local mills produced high quality cloth which was sold all over the United States. Cottonseed production also began to increase in the late 1800s; this led to new manufacturing plants being built throughout Starkville as demand for goods increased. Steel production also became significant during this time; however, it did not play a large role until after World War II when importation of steel became necessary due to wartime demands. In 1930, Jackson County was formed from parts of neighboring Orleans County and Starkville became its county seat; however, due to racial tensions within Jackson County at that time, it remained primarily African American until 1957 when white residents were welcomed into the community fully without any form of segregationism or discrimination. After Reconstruction ended in America following the Civil Rights Movement (1912-1992), economic conditions deteriorated rapidly within many southern communities as Southern whites lost their power while Black Americans gained increasing access to education and jobs opportunities across America during what is now known as "The Great Migration". This process has often been referred to as "the civil rights movement" because Black Americans seeking opportunity emigrated northward during that time period despite face numerous obstacles such asdiscrimination and poverty - yet they managed to achieve similar levels of success regardless of race or ethnicity
